Let's talk about Detroit Red Wings "German Machine" Moritz Seider

From being a surprise sixth overall pick, to winning the Calder Trophy, Moritz Seider cemented himself as the number one defenseman for the Detroit Red Wings. Here are a few reminders of what he's done so far and where he's heading.

After being drafted sixth overall, about 15-20 spots higher than he was projected to go, Moritz Seider became the shock pick of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. Since then, he has proven to be far more than anybody expected by becoming the Red Wings bonified number one defenseman.

The 23-year-old German had to become the Red Wings number-one defenseman in an incredibly short time, and he's continuing to prove that fact every year. While his production may have dropped from his Calder-winning rookie season it's not by an incredible amount it's been at most, eight points less than his 50-point rookie season.

Seider has been given the most difficult task of being the first person the coaching staff turns to for penalty kills and taking on other teams' top lines. No other Detroit Red Wings defender has come anywhere close to what he was put through last season.

The German Machine, Moritz Seider, is only becoming more advanced for the Detroit Red Wings

"The German Machine" wasn't the nickname given to Seider for no reason. He was given that name because when he plays the game, he plays it like he's just an actual machine. Just going out and giving 110% every time he's on the ice.

He also brings a high level of physicality last seen by Niklas Kronwall. There is no shortage of videos that show just how difficult it is to play against Seider. Whether it be physically or offensively, he has been touted by numerous players across the league as one of the most difficult defensemen to play against and one of the brightest young minds in the entire league.

Seider has also proven to be tough as hell. Being no stranger to putting his body on the line, he became the first player to have 200 Hits and 200 blocked shots in a single season since it was done by Mike Komisarek in the 2007-08 season with the Montreal Canadiens.

When discussing his toughness, it would be disingenuous to leave out the time when he was hospitalized with flu and on the same day played a game against the Washington Capitals. Despite all of his sacrifices, Seider has yet to miss a single game since debuting in the 2021-22 season allowing him to hold an ironman streak of 246 games straight.

I guess to sum everything up. Seider may not have a great chance to win the Norris Trophy with the likes of Cale Makar, Quinn Huges, and the other veteran defensemen in the league at the same time. But, he is proving that he has all the potential to be in the conversation at some point in his career. Moritz Seider has truly proven that he is the Red Wings "German Machine."
