After Petr Mrázek sustained a lower-body injury less than two minutes into Monday's matchup against the Utah Hockey Club, Sebastian Cossa stepped in to back up Alex Lyon in Denver. Cossa's call-up came in the midst of turbulence for Detroit's goalie department — with Talbot unavailable, Lyon was forced to play back-to-back nights.

Detroit Red Wings recall Sebastian Cossa under emergency conditions

Depending on the severity of Mrázek's injury, it's possible that we could see Cossa remaining with the Detroit Red Wings as they make a last-ditch effort to sneak into a wild card spot. General manager Steve Yzerman confirmed the team's intent to carry three goalies after the trade deadline. Given the vapidity of the Red Wings' 68.5% penalty kill (league-worst according to ESPN) the need for solid goaltending is more pressing than ever.

Cossa made his National Hockey League (NHL) debut earlier this season in Detroit's 6-5 shootout victory in Buffalo on December 9. He's maintained a .913 save percentage this season with the Grand Rapids Griffins, matching last season's performance and remaining one of Hockeytown's most promising prospects. Given his lack of experience in the league, the decision to recall him has raised some eyebrows. It'll be up to Cossa to prove whether extra youth talent can bolster Detroit's fight to the finish.

Emmitt Finnie assigned to Grand Rapids Griffins

The Griffins have earned some extra padding for their roster, too. With the Kamloops Blazers falling short of WHL playoff contention, center Emmitt Finnie has been reassigned to Grand Rapids to finish out the season. The standout forward will fit right in with the Griffins, who currently stand in third place in the Central Division of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Finnie's season with the Blazers saw him tally an impressive 84 points in just 55 games. He's shown major growth from last year's 59-point season, making him an exciting prospect to keep on the radar. Keep an eye on him, especially if the Wings fall short of the postseason — he's likely to see some playoff action in Grand Rapids.
