The Detroit Red Wings are making a statement in their own way- or not. Adding yet another former St. Louis Blues player, the Red Wings are clearly looking to make a jump.

The Detroit Red Wings made a big splash yesterday in free agency. That was something that led to a lot of controversy in the Red Wings community. Some people thought that they were going to spend some money in order to make a jump this upcoming season. Others thought differently.

The other half thought that the Red Wings shouldn’t go and spend money because it’s pre-mature. They have so many young players that are going to be competing for roster spots that many feel that the signings they make are simply just a waste of space.

In my opinion, if you care, neither are wrong per-say. However, I feel that having a team full of rookies isn’t the way to go. I feel you need the veteran signings. The proven players. That’s how you are going to become a winning organization once again.

Rookies make too many mistakes because they haven’t experienced the NHL level of play before. These guys are literally paid a large amount of money to make sure that other teams and players don’t succeed. That’s why free agency is so important for teams like the Red Wings.

Yesterday, they signed many talented players to help add depth, scoring power, and defensive talent.

They signed Andrew Copp which landed them their center two behind captain, Dylan Larkin. With the addition of Ben Chiarot, they got a blue line defenseman who can add veteran experience and leadership on a young defensive core. With the addition of Dominik Kubalik, they got a very talented depth forward. And that leads us into the big name on this article- David Perron.

Red Wings Free Agency Frenzy: David Perron

The Detroit Red Wings were busy on the phones all day yesterday. With multiple great signings made, let’s take a look at the power play weapon, and former St. Louis Blue, David Perron.

David Perron

The Red Wings were busy on the phones yesterday, but perhaps the best signing of the day was this addition of winger, David Perron.

Perron is just one of the many names the Red Wings signed however, this signing is one of the more funny ones if you ask me.

Now, I know you think I used the wrong terminology for that statement. and you’re partially right. But, I meant to say funny.

The Red Wings in recent years have added Robby Fabbri, Oskar Sundqvist, Jake Walman, Ville Husso and now David Perron. So in other words, the Red Wings are pretty much becoming, as my father so hilariously put it, “Blues North”. But, he’s still a very good player that will bring a lot to the Red Wings within his term here.

How Does David Perron Fit?

David Perron was signed more than likely to take over Raymond’s spot on the first line with captain, Dylan Larkin and winger, Tyler Bertuzzi. Now, that’s all speculation but, there are only a couple combinations that make sense for the Red Wings and that one tops my list.

As for what Perron will offer in terms of style of play and special teams, that’s where it gets very straight forward.

David Perron has bounced around a lot in his 15-year career. Having played for the St. Louis Blues, Edmonton Oilers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Anaheim Ducks, Vegas Golden Knights, and now the Red Wings- we have quite a bit to go off of in terms of what he is going to offer us this upcoming season.

Since coming into the league, he’s always been known for his power play ability on the wing and that’s 100% something to expect from him this season. This past season with the Blues, he had 11 power play goals along with 15 power play assists. I think that is the main reason why the Red Wings targeted him in free agency. But there’s more to him than that.

I think his veteran leadership and power play ability made him a primary target for the Red Wings. However, let’s not discount what he does on the ice in terms of scoring at even strength. Having put up 27 goals this past season and 16 of those were even strength goals.

His style of play, and shot, made him the perfect fit.

The Detroit Red Wings may or may not compete next year, but the truth of the matter is they will continue to get closer to holding the cup once again if they keep attacking free agency like they have been.
