Why the Red Wings won't trade Dylan Larkin right away

It's been weeks since NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported that Dylan Larkin had submitted a three-team trade request, yet there has been little to no meaningful update on where those conversations stand.

In today's NHL, trade rumors usually gain traction quickly if there's real momentum. Instead, everything surrounding Larkin has gone quiet. That silence has only become more interesting after Steve Yzerman stepped down as general manager, leaving Detroit without anyone officially leading hockey operations as training camp rapidly approaches.

If discussions were progressing, you'd expect more leaks or signs that a deal was close. Instead, the Red Wings appear to be in a holding pattern.

Was this about more than a trade?

One question worth asking is whether requesting a trade was always the end goal.

Larkin has never hidden his frustration with how the organization has been managed since the collapse of the 2024-25 season. His criticism of Yzerman's inactivity at the trade deadline was one of the few times we've seen Detroit's captain publicly challenge the direction of the franchise.

With Yzerman now gone, it's fair to wonder whether Larkin and his camp wanted organizational change as much as they wanted a new team. If the biggest issue was confidence in management, then that obstacle may no longer exist.

That doesn't automatically mean Larkin is staying, but it certainly changes the conversation.

Timing matters

The calendar also works against a blockbuster trade.

Training camp is less than two months away, and the NHL regular season begins on September 29. By this point, most organizations have already built the roster they expect to enter the season with. Cap space is tighter, assets have already been moved and few teams are in position to make a franchise-altering trade.

Detroit would also be trying to maximize the return for its captain, a Michigan native and the face of the franchise. That's much easier said than done this late in the summer.

Waiting could increase Larkin's value

Whether you call it a rebuild, a reset or a retool, the Red Wings should be focused on the future. If trading Larkin is ultimately part of that plan, patience may be their greatest asset.

The trade deadline often creates desperation. A contender that suddenly loses its first or second-line center to injury could be willing to pay significantly more than anyone is offering today.

If that scenario never develops, next offseason presents another opportunity. Teams will have fresh salary cap flexibility, a new free agency period and a clearer picture of where they stand.

For now, there simply isn't much urgency to make a move.

Until a new general manager is hired and Detroit's long-term direction becomes clearer, keeping Dylan Larkin may be the most logical outcome, even if his trade request remains on the table.
