One of the biggest chapters in Detroit Red Wings history officially came to an end Wednesday.

The organization announced that Steve Yzerman is stepping down as Executive Vice President and General Manager, transitioning into a new role as Senior Advisor to Governor and CEO Chris Ilitch. The Red Wings also confirmed they have begun a search for their next head of hockey operations, with both internal and external candidates expected to be considered.

The end of an era

When Yzerman returned to Detroit in April of 2019, the expectations couldn't have been higher. The franchise icon came home after a successful run as general manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning, where he built the foundation for a perennial Stanley Cup contender.

His return gave Red Wings fans hope that another championship window would eventually open in Hockeytown.

While that ultimate goal wasn't reached during his tenure, Yzerman helped guide Detroit through one of the organization's most difficult rebuilding periods. He reshaped the prospect pool, accumulated young talent through the draft and established a foundation centered around players like Moritz Seider, Lucas Raymond, Simon Edvinsson and Marco Kasper.

Remaining part of the organization

Although Yzerman is stepping away from day-to-day hockey operations, he isn't leaving the Red Wings.

Instead, he'll serve as Senior Advisor to Chris Ilitch, allowing the organization to continue benefiting from his decades of hockey experience while a new leadership group takes over.

In the team's announcement, Yzerman thanked the Ilitch family and said he was proud to remain with the franchise that has meant so much throughout both his playing and executive career. Chris Ilitch also praised Yzerman's contributions, saying his impact on the organization extends far beyond his time as general manager.

What Happens Next?

The timing of the move adds another layer to an already eventful offseason. Reports surrounding Dylan Larkin's trade request, Patrick Kane's unsigned status and several veteran departures have already put the spotlight on Detroit's future.

Now, the Red Wings must also identify the executive who will lead the next phase of the rebuild.

Whoever takes over will inherit a roster featuring one of the NHL's strongest collections of young talent, including Seider, Raymond, Edvinsson, Kasper and several top prospects waiting for their opportunity.

Yzerman's legacy in Detroit

No matter what comes next, Steve Yzerman's place in Red Wings history is secure.

He captained Detroit to three Stanley Cups, spent more than two decades wearing the Winged Wheel and later returned to help rebuild the franchise from the front office. While another championship wasn't added during his time as general manager, his fingerprints will remain on this roster for years to come.

The next chapter now belongs to someone else, but Yzerman's influence on the Detroit Red Wings is far from over.
