The Detroit Red Wings announced today that Steve Yzerman is stepping down from his role as general manager. Per the Red Wings' press release, he has now transitioned into a role as senior advisor to Governor and CEO, Chris Illitch.
"Steve's lifetime of contributions to the Red Wings has meant more to this franchise than words can truly express, and I have the highest level of respect for his continued commitment to our organization,” said Ilitch. “We are thankful for Steve’s hard work and dedication as General Manager and are grateful knowing Steve will remain where he belongs – here with the Red Wings family.”
Yzerman was the 11th general manager in Red Wings history, serving the team since the end of the 2017-18 season. The Red Wings failed to make the playoffs in any of the eight years under Yzerman.
"I am sincerely grateful to Chris and the entire Ilitch family,” said Yzerman. “This organization has given me incredible opportunities, from my time as a player to the privilege of returning as General Manager. I've appreciated every experience throughout the years, and I’m extremely proud to remain part of this great franchise."
Change was needed with Red Wings
It's been clear for some time that change has been needed with the Red Wings. From the Dylan Larkin trade fiasco to the lack of urgency with trades or roster moves, something had to give.
“Clearly, we are not where we and our fans expect to be as an organization” said Chris Illitch. “I’m looking forward to bringing in new leadership to build the championship-caliber organization Hockeytown deserves."
It's hard to interpret these words as a jab at Yzerman or if it's a sign that Chris Illitch understands the frustration fans feel. Either way, it's clear that both he and Yzerman recognized that a change had to be done.
It's likely that Yzerman advocates for Kris Draper and Shawn Horcoff, both of whom served as his assistant general managers under his tenure. Still, there's a strong chance they look outside the box on this one, which could lead to some exciting results.
“My commitment to the Red Wings and this community will never waver, and I look forward to supporting the organization in whatever role is needed to achieve our collective goals,” said Yzerman. “I want to thank our passionate fanbase for their support, as they are what makes Detroit and the entire state of Michigan a very special place in the hockey world.”
