Don't look now, but the 2025 NHL Draft is almost here. The draft will be held June 27-28 at L.A. Live's Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, and the Detroit Red Wings own the No. 13 overall pick.
Steve Yzerman has a busy offseason in store, and his first round selection on Friday could set the tone for the summer. A slew of talent should be available when the Red Wings are on the clock, meaning Yzerman could go a number of ways with the pick.
As we look at drafts from previous years, there are several noteworthy names that have been selected No. 13 overall in recent memory. Let's take a closer look at those names and how they have had a significant impact on their respective NHL clubs since hearing their names called.
Seth Jarvis (2020), Carolina Hurricanes
Seth Jarvis was selected No. 13 overall by the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2020 NHL Draft. That's the same draft that saw the Red Wings select Lucas Raymond fourth overall.
Jarvis has blossomed into a premier goal-scorer in just a couple seasons at the NHL level. Playing on a defensive-minded Hurricanes team, he led Carolina in goals this past season with 32, and potted 33 goals in 2023-24. He set a career-high with 12 power play goals this past season, and owns a career rating of plus-56 in 304 regular season games.
Jarvis has also thrived in the postseason. In 82 career playoff games, the Winnipeg, MB native has potted 28 goals and dished out 36 assists. He averaged more than a point-per-game this past postseason, totaling 16 points on six goals and 10 assists in 15 games.
Still just 23 years of age, Jarvis has a bright future ahead of him. His ice time has steadily increased each of the past four seasons, and he could see an even bigger role in 2025-26.
Josh Morrissey (2013), Winnipeg Jets
The Winnipeg Jets selected Josh Morrissey with the 13th overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft. The Red Wings did not pick until No. 20, when they took Anthony Mantha.
It took a couple seasons for Morrissey to break the 40-point plateau, but once he did, he hasn't looked back. Morrissey has become one of the best offensive-defenseman in hockey, and has collected 207 points over the past three seasons. His efforts have landed him in the top seven in Norris Trophy voting in three consecutive years.
Entering his age 30 season in 2025-26, Morrissey is a bonafide No. 1 defenseman who should continue to produce at an elite level.
Nick Suzuki (2017), Vegas Golden Knights (traded to Montreal)
Nick Suzuki was selected 13th overall by the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2017 NHL Draft. Detroit had the ninth overall pick, and selected Michael Rasmussen.
Suzuki made an immediate impact for the Canadiens, posting 41 points in 71 games during his rookie campaign in 2019-20. He finished ninth in Calder Trophy voting, and was named to the All-Rookie Team.
Prior to the 2022-23 season at just 23 years of age, Suzuki became the youngest captain in Canadiens history, succeeding Shea Weber. He's been a durable center, playing in all 82 games in each of the past four seasons.
This past season, he scored 30 goals and set career-bests in assists (59), points (89), and a plus-minus of plus-19, while leading the Canadiens to their first playoff appearance since 2020-21.
Spencer Knight (2019), Florida Panthers
The Florida Panthers selected goaltender Spencer Knight with the 13th overall pick in 2019. The Red Wings selected Moritz Seider sixth overall in that draft. Knight was the first goaltender taken in the first round in Panthers history, and the highest goalie selected in the NHL Draft since Jack Campbell was taken by the Stars 11th overall in 2010.
Knight's playing time was limited in Florida, and he was traded to the Blackhawks this past season. Playing behind veteran netminder Sergei Bobrovsky didn't present much opportunity for Knight, and he also spent time away from the team during the 2023-24 season in the NHL Player Assistance Program. But when he was between the pipes in Florida, he was effective.
Knight played in 80 games over the course of four seasons for the Panthers, posting a record of 44-25-7 with a 2.76 goals-against average and .906 save percentage. He played in 15 games for the Blackhawks in 2024-25, going 5-8-2 with a 3.19 goals-against average and .893 save percentage.
Knight is still just 24 years old, and he could see more starts with the Blackhawks in 2025-26.
Ty Dellandrea (2018), Dallas Stars
The Dallas Stars selected Ty Dellandrea 13th overall in the 2018 NHL Draft. The Red Wings selected Filip Zadina sixth overall with their first round selection that year.
Dellandrea spent seven seasons with the Dallas organization, appearing in 151 games while scoring 14 goals and collecting 28 assists for 42 points. He mostly served as a bottom-six forward who saw between 10 and 14 minutes of ice time per game. His best season was in 2022-23 when he scored nine goals and dished out 19 assists for a total of 28 points.
Dellandrea was traded to the Sharks prior to the 2024-25 season for a 2025 fourth round pick. He quickly signed a two-year contract with San Jose, and played in 68 games this past season.
