What Red Wings fans must know about the 2025 NHL Draft

The 2025 NHL Draft is fast approaching, and the Detroit Red Wings will add a few new prospects to their pipeline before we all know it.

The Detroit Red Wings are heading into the 2025 NHL Draft in better shape than even some teams who finished ahead of them. They have a strong young core of players like Dylan Larkin, Lucas Raymond, Alex DeBrincat, Moritz Seider, and Simon Edvinsson, with up-and-comers like Marco Kasper, Carter Mazur, Elmer Soderblom, Albert Johansson, and Sebastian Cossa.

If those names don’t excite you, then I don’t know what will. No, they haven’t translated into a playoff berth, but given their current trajectory, I’ll assume the Wings near-decade-long playoff drought is on the back nine.

And toward the end of the month, general manager Steve Yzerman has a chance to make an already strong prospect pool even stronger while the big club’s core keeps brewing. The fact that the Wings boast one of the stronger cores and prospect pipelines are two things you need to know about them. Now, here’s what you need to know about the upcoming draft.

The Red Wings and the 2025 NHL Draft

The Red Wings have at least one pick in each of the seven rounds, and two picks in the third and seventh rounds. Steve Yzerman, while hitting home runs with quite a few first-round picks, still struggles finding adequate talent in Rounds 2 through 7, so let’s see if 2025 is an outlier. If so, the Wings current prospects pool will transform from great to elite.

Here’s a list of where the Wings pick in each round:

  • Round 1: No. 13
  • Round 2:: No. 44
  • Round 3a: No. 75 (from the NY Rangers)
  • Round 3b: No. 76
  • Round 4: 122 (from the Tampa Bay Lightning)
  • Round 5: No. 140
  • Round 6: No. 172
  • Round 7a: No. 204
  • Round 7b: No. 212 (from the St. Louis Blues)

Now, this doesn’t mean the Wings will use all of their picks, especially if Yzerman’s looking to move a few of them for veterans so he can land a player who would help the team immediately. If that occurs, then the Wings should be even more fun to watch in 2025-26, and maybe we won’t see another late-season collapse.
