It's safe to say that the Detroit Red Wings have a strong pool of goalie prospects. Starting netminder John Gibson is set to return as the starter for 2026–27, playing out the the last year of his $6.4 million contract. Still, Gibson gained respect for his overall performance from the fans.

It wasn't always easy, especially later on in the season, but he had a great run through the lions' share of the year.

Gibson helped the team reach the top of the league from December to January. He posted an impressive 2.16 GAA, a .923 SV% and a 17-4-1 record during that time. He finished the season with a 2.72 GAA, a .901 SV%, and a record of 29-22-4, including 4 shutouts in 57 games. To top it all off, he is the first goalie to have an 8-game win streak for the franchise since Chris Osgood in 2007 -- a feat he achieved this twice this season.

The last goalie to play that many games in a single season for the Wings was Alex Nedeljkovic. He played 59 games in the 21-22 season, posting a 3.31 GAA, a .901 SV%, and a record of 20-24-9 with 4 shutouts.

Backup Cam Talbot, at 38 years old and in the last year of his $2.5 million deal, likely won’t re-sign with the club. He had a record of 12-9-3, but his overall numbers fell, finishing with a 3.19 GAA and a .833 SV% in 34 games. The Wings are one of the oldest teams in the league. Moving on from the soon-to-be 39-year-old seems wise.

How the prospect pool shapes out

Sebastian Cossa has strong stats with a 2.40 GAA, a .912 SV%, and 8 shutouts, boasting a 69-32-19 record in three seasons with the Grand Rapids Griffins. He was a first round pick in 2021 and is seen as a potential future star for the Red Wings.

Trey Augustine was selected 41st overall in the 2023 draft. He has a strong winning background and many accolades in his career. He’s now with the Griffins for their playoff push after he finished his college career at Michigan State University. He played a game and a half at the pro level this season.

In the 25-26 offseason, Steve Yzerman signed Michal Postava, a 23-year-old Czech goaltender. Postava had great stats in the Czech league: a 2.39 GAA, a .921 SV%, and a 23-18-0 record with 3 shutouts. In 17 playoff starts, he had a standout 1.97 GAA, a .940 SV%, and a 10-7-0 record. In his North American debut with the Griffins this season, Postava achieved an impressive 1.71 GAA and a .937 SV% in 25 games. He also recorded 4 shutouts.

As I write this on April 20, 2026, the Griffins announced that Michal Postava earned AHL Player of the Week. He went 2-0-1 with a 1.01 GAA and a .960 SV% to end the regular season with the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Detroit's goaltending depth is impressive. You have Gibson, Cossa, Postava, Augustine, and Gylander, who impressed in GRG in his 8 games. Guimond dominated in the USHL. Then there’s Pradel and Miller, who continue to show their stuff at a professional level.

The organization has never been this deep in goaltending. It's likely their strongest area overall and among the top in the NHL. The backup role is up for grabs, and, at this point, Steve Yzerman should look at internal candidates to fill it.
