The Detroit Red Wings are inching ever closer toward finally signing a general manager. Earlier this week, reports confirmed that Detroit Tigers general manager (and reported finalist for the position) Jeff Greenberg pulled himself out of consideration.
This time around, another candidate is out of consideration: assistant general manager (and interim GM) Shawn Horcoff.
According to Octopus Thrower Site Expert Jake Rivard, sources close to the matter have confirmed that Horcoff is no longer in the running for the GM role.

September 9, 2026Horcoff has been the interim GM for the Red Wings since Yzerman stepped down in mid-July, handling everything from contract extensions to league-wide GM calls. He's served as assistant GM to the Red Wings for the last the last six seasons, previously serving as the Director of Player Development with the organization.
GM search slow but steady
It feels like Red Wings have been searching for a new general manager all summer.
To be fair, that's not far off base. With Steve Yzerman's resignation coming mid-July, the Red Wings have spent the last two months trying to secure his successor. They've hired an outside firm to find the right candidate. Now, with Labor Day in the rearview mirror and training camp set to begin, the Red Wings need to find their candidate as soon as possible.
If Tony Wolak of The Hockey Writers' sources are believed to be correct, assistant general manager Kris Draper is out of consideration for the role, as well. The only remaining candidates, as of right now, are Brett Peterson, Scott White and Jeff Kealty. There could, of course, be another candidate out of left field, but these three are the most oft mentioned and sourced as finalists for the role.
Where Horcoff goes from here
If the next general manager doesn't bring Horcoff on board, there's an extremely strong chance he joins another organization. His track record speaks for itself, as he's played a massive role in bringing the Grand Rapids Griffins into the relevance it shares today. The Griffins finished second in the AHL last season thanks to the combined efforts of outstanding goaltending, consistent veteran depth and head coach Dan Watson's vision.
For Horcoff, a young, talented assistant GM, the sky's the limit. For the Red Wings, this means one day closer to finding their ideal candidate.
