As the Detroit Red Wings slowly inch towards finding their next general manager, more and more names drop from consideration.
First came current assistant general manager Kris Draper, who, according to Tony Wolak of The Hockey Writers, is no longer being considered for the role.
Today, Detroit Tigers GM Jeff Greenberg removed his name from consideration as well. Evan Woodberry, MLive beat writer for the Detroit Tigers, shared the news early Labor Day.

September 7, 2026Greenberg briefly served as the assistant general manager to the Chicago Blackhawks before accepting the role with the Tigers, where he's been since 2023. He was one of four candidates mentioned by Elliotte Friedman and Sean Shapiro, with Friedman repeatedly noting that Greenberg is an "intriguing candidate".
Red Wings shortlist grows shorter
The longer this search goes, the shorter the list of finalists becomes. With Draper and Greenberg out of the picture, the only other names mentioned regularly by media figures include Brett Peterson of the Florida Panthers, Scott White of the Dallas Stars and Jeff Kealty of the San Jose Sharks.
Other names like Tyler Dellow of the Carolina Hurricanes have appeared sporadically among insiders, though not with the concrete connection the former names have held.
The Red Wings, according to Frank Seravalli, were hoping to get their GM business sorted out before Labor Day, but it doesn't appear as if that will happen. The team hired Turnkeyzrg, an outside firm, in order to conduct their search. It's been some time since the search began, but as the names continue to drop from the list, the process appears to be reaching its final stages.
Who's left on the candidate list
Peterson, Kealty and White all come with plenty of experience on teams that have either won the Stanley Cup or made appearances in the Cup Finals. Here's a brief review of their qualifications:
- Brett Peterson is the assistant general manager of the Florida Panthers and current general manager of Team USA's World Junior team. He's in charge of roster construction and salary cap management with the Panthers and was involved in bringing on Matthew Tkachuk, Brad Marchand and Seth Jones. His ascension in the hockey world is practically inevitable.
- Jeff Kealty: Kealty started his career as a scout and worked his way up to assistant general manager with nearly two decades with the Nashville Predators. His eye for talent helped the Predators find late round gems like Viktor Arvidsson and Pekka Rinne. This offseason, Kealty joined the San Jose Sharks as assistant general manager. That said, the promise of a promotion may convince him to jump ship.
- Scott White: White is one of the most experienced candidates remaining, having ran the Dallas Stars' AHL affiliate, the Texas Stars, for over 15 years. While GM Jim Nill handles trades, White focuses on player development. He's been instrumental in helping the Stars stay a deep, ferocious team over the last decade.White interviewed for the Toronto Maple Leafs and Nashville Predators roles this last offseason and will likely be an intriguing candidate for years to come (assuming the Red Wings don't scoop him up, of course).
