Detroit Red Wings fans are proud of their hockey history. As an Original Six franchise, the Wings boast a rich history of winning that fans are hungry to see again.
Whether it be the storied history of the franchise, the countless legends that have played in Hockeytown, or the famous Winged Wheel logo, there's no denying that the Red Wings are an iconic hockey brand that fans of other NHL teams are envious of.
Frequent postseason victories make the Red Wings one of the most successful franchises in NHL history
The Red Wings have won 11 Stanley Cups in franchise history. That is good for third-most all-time, and cements Detroit as one of the winningest franchises in NHL history.
But did you know that the Red Wings have the second-most Stanley Cup Final appearances? They've played in a total of 24 Stanley Cup Finals, which is second only to the Montreal Canadiens, who have 35 appearances in the Stanley Cup Final.
Montreal's last Stanley Cup Final appearance came in 2021, and their last title came in 1993. Famously (or infamously), the Habs remain the last Canadian team to hoist the Stanley Cup.
The Oilers came close in 2023-24 as they took the Panthers to seven games, but Canada's Stanley Cup drought has now reached 32 years. Montreal has made some strong moves this offseason, and pose a big threat to the Red Wings in 2025-26.
Despite recent struggles, Red Wings fans remain dedicated to their team
Detroit's last Stanley Cup victory came in 2008, and their last Final appearance came in 2009. The franchise has not made the postseason since 2016, and fans are hungry for more playoff hockey in the Motor City.
Despite the struggles in recent years, Red Wings fans remain energetic, passionate, and intensely dedicated to their team. With that being said, fans aren't wrong to voice some frustration in the lack of competitiveness over the last decade.
Steve Yzerman is entering his seventh season calling the shots in Detroit, and fans are still yearning for the postseason. Were Yzerman's offseason moves enough to take the Red Wings back to the playoffs? Does he have another offseason move or two up his sleeve?
Only time will tell, but one things for sure - Detroit's 24 Stanley Cup Final appearances make the Red Wings one of the most successful teams in NHL history.
