The Detroit Red Wings announced that they have signed 2025 second-round pick Eddie Genborg to an entry-level contract. Genborg, selected 44th overall by the Red Wings, is having an outstanding season with Timrå IK of the Swedish Hockey League. In 43 games with the club, the 18-year-old forward has nine goals and 16 assists for 25 points.

Genborg, per the team, will report to the Grand Rapids Griffins for the remainder of the 2025-26 season on an amateur tryout. His entry-level contract with the Red Wings is set to kick in at the start of the 2026-27 season.

Genborg brings grit, passion to Red Wings

Eddie Genborg fits the arcehtypical mold of a Red Wings draft pick. He's a smart, strong two-way player with a penchant for physicality. He uses his frame to overpower his opposition, opening up scoring lanes for the rest of his line. The EliteProspects 2025 Draft Guide sings praises of Genborg's forechecking, finishing and net-front presence.

"Genborg is a physical two-way forward with a strong forechecking presence and good finishing instincts around the net," the guide states. "He hustles hard and throws his weight around on the forecheck, controls the cycle by sealing off pucks and dealing with back pressure and finds ways to win body positioning in the net front."

A few months back, Genborg helped bring Sweden its first IIHF World Junior Championship gold victory since 2012. In seven games with Sweden, Genborg put up three goals and five assists for eight points.

Genborg's future role in Detroit

Genborg turns 19 next month. With that in mind, barring an impressive training camp and preseason outing, it's likely that he spends a full year in Grand Rapids before joining the Red Wings in 2027-28. Having said that, several younger players have forced their way onto the roster this season, most notably Emmitt Finnie and Axel Sandin-Pellikka. It's entirely possible that Genborg can fight his way onto the roster, especially if major changes are made this offseason.

Genborg's role as a net-front presence could very well make him the inheritor to James van Riemsdyk's role beside the net. His tall frame, coupled with his imposing play style, allows him the ability to outmuscle his opposition at every outing. Genborg, as it stands, fills the exact role then-general manager Ken Holland hoped to fill when he drafted Michael Rasmussen.

If Genborg proves himself on North American ice, there's a chance he could arrive in Hockeytown sooner rather than later.
