Red Wings head coach finally says out loud what everyone is thinking

Detroit Red Wings coach Todd McLellan finally had the gall to say out loud what everyone has been thinking about for a long time.

The Detroit Red Wings’ season officially ended in a mushroom cloud this past weekend. While there are still two games left on the docket, the games are just requisites to conclude the 2025-26 season.

Following the Red Wings’ 5-3 loss at home to the New Jersey Devils on Saturday, and after getting booed off the ice, head coach Todd McLellan addressed the media.

And boy, what a painful press conference that was. During the media scrum, McLellan finally said out loud what everyone has been thinking about for a while now.

"This is Hockeytown, they're not even clamoring for a Cup...they just want a group to give them something to cheer for. We earned that reaction."

But those comments don’t even begin to scratch the surface. McLellan admitted that the team did not hold up its end of the bargain with fans. He even directly referenced Andrew Copp's comments relating to outside noise.

“This outside noise stuff or whatever, that’s inside noise. Those are our fans in our building. They pay to watch us play, and we get paid well to perform for them.”

You have to admire the guts that it took for McLellan to say that much out loud. He didn’t cut and run or try to make excuses for himself. Unfortunately, the honest admission of the team’s shortcomings came far too late.

McLellan rightfully acknowledged fans’ right to protest, declaring the following:

“And they’re (the fans) fully entitled to their opinion, and we deserve their opinion. There’s no other way to sugarcoat it. That’s what we earned.”

While the comments weren’t exactly McLellan falling on his sword, they were the most honest and candid admission Red Wings fans have gotten all year. The transparency is appreciated, but that’s something that should have come from the organization much earlier in the year.

It now remains to be seen if general manager Steve Yzerman also admits to something similar. Red Wings fans deserve an explanation for this season’s mess, even if the reasons for it are abundantly clear.

If anything, the organization owes it to the fanbase to own up to this year. But most importantly, fans also deserve an explanation for what the team plans to do moving forward.

A coaching change seems unlikely. But what does seem like a growing possibility is Yzerman retreating to a full-time President of Hockey Operations role, allowing a new voice to take over the GM role. NHL insider Elliotte Friedman already posited the idea earlier this season. It seems entirely possible that this could be an angle the Red Wings take.

Nothing is expected to happen in the next few days. But chatter should pick up once the regular season ends.
