The Detroit Red Wings are entering an incredibly important offseason. After a nightmare finish to the season that led them to extend their playoff drought to 10 years, the Red Wings absolutely need to make some additions to their roster this summer.

The Red Wings are entering the offseason with some notable needs. One of them is another skilled winger in their top six, as they simply need more scoring. The potential options on the free agent market this year are pretty limited, so the Red Wings may need to find a top-six winger through the trade market.

When looking at trade candidates around the NHL, Vancouver Canucks winger Jake DeBrusk stands out as a prime potential target for the Red Wings. With the Canucks entering a rebuild, DeBrusk was one of the most-talked-about trade candidates leading up to the deadline. This is expected to carry over to the summer, and due to this, the Red Wings would be wise to kick tires on him.

DeBrusk was once again a solid offensive contributor and stood out as a bright spot among a brutal. Canucks team. He led all 2025-26 Canucks in goals with 23 goals and finished the campaign with 42 points in 81 games. This follows a 28 goal, 48 point campaign across 82 games for Vancouver during the 2024-25 season. With numbers like these, he would have the potential to be a strong pickup for a Red Wings club that needs more offense.

DeBrusk's contract could also make him an appealing target for the Red Wings. This is because DeBrusk would be far more than just a one-season rental for Detroit if acquired. He currently runs at a $5.5 million cap hit until the end of the 2030-31 season.

Where DeBrusk could fit in the Red Wings' lineup if acquired

If the Red Wings struck a deal for DeBrusk, he would give them another interesting option to consider for their first line with Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond. It is no secret that the Red Wings could use an upgrade for their top line left wing spot. Bringing in a consistent 20-goal scorer like DeBrusk would provide them with just that.

DeBrusk's offensive skill would also make him a clear option for the Red Wings' power play if brought in. It's important to note that DeBrusk had 19 goals and 24 points on the power play this season. He was clearly a difference-maker for the Canucks on their special teams unit.

Ultimately, with the Red Wings needing another skilled winger, DeBrusk is exactly the kind of forward that they should consider bringing in. He has a good contract and would give Detroit another much-needed sniper to work with.
