The Detroit Red Wings announced the preseason schedule and dates of their annual tournament in a press release. This time around, the Red Wings will play the Columbus Blue Jackets, Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres. Here's what the schedule looks like:
Date | Opponent | Time |
|---|---|---|
September 21 | @ Columbus | 7:00 p.m. EST |
September 22 | @ Pittsburgh | 7:00 p.m. EST |
September 24 | vs. Buffalo | 7:00 p.m. EST |
September 26 | vs. Columbus | 7:00 p.m. EST |
Additionally, the team announced the revival of their annual prospect tournament and training camp, which will take place at the BELFOR Energy Center earlier this month. The tournament will take place September 12-15, with prospects from the Pittsburgh Penguins, Detroit Red Wings, Dallas Stars and Columbus Blue Jackets set to face off at Little Caesar's Arena. Additionally, Training Camp will take place from September 17-20.
That said, it appears as if there are a few changes to the overall preseason -- some more noticeable than others.
The biggest changes to the Red Wings' preseason
Due to the NHL's new 84-game slate, the preseason has been reduced to just four games as opposed to seven. Rather than hold Training Camp in Traverse City, as they have in years past, the Red Wings will instead hold the four-day event at Little Caesar's Arena.
Additionally, it looks like the Red Wings won't be playing their annual Red and White game. There was no mention of it on any communication sent out by the organization.
The press release was quite vague, offering little information on whether or not the event will feature crowds. "Further information regarding the 2026 Detroit Red Wings Prospect Tournament and Training Camp at Little Caesars Arena, including scheduling, streaming, and credential information, will be announced at a later date," says Thomas Roth of DetroitRedWings.com.
With no mention of where to purchase tickets, it's led several fans to wonder whether or not they'll be able to watch the prospect tournament as they have in the past.
As of right now, it is unclear why the Red Wings have chosen not to return to Traverse City. It's hard to say whether the Red and White game will happen, either.
It appears that, one way or another, change is coming to Detroit, starting with their newly revamped preseason.
