Dylan Larkin's lack of communication is a slap in the face to Red Wings fans

It's safe to say Larkin won't be greeted with cheers in his return to Hockeytown.

The most frustrating part about this Dylan Larkin saga for Detroit Red Wings fans is the complete lack of communication.

The soon-to-be-former captain of the team hasn't shared a single word or statement since his trade request. Nothing, save for his insultingly short trade list, has come out from his camp. There are rumors, of course, surrounding the Dallas Stars, but other than that, fans have been left completely in the dark through this process.

One would think the team's leader would be able to offer something - anything - to help fans understand his side.

Instead, the hockey world is left with deafening silence. It's a slap in the face to the fans that have cheered Larkin on throughout his career and an insult to some of the most loyal fans in the NHL

Larkin won't be greeted with cheers upon his return

When Larkin is traded, no matter the return, it's safe to say he won't earn a hero's greeting when he hits Hockeytown again. Where it was once understandable for a player of Larkin's caliber to request a trade, the lack of even strength production throughout 2026, coupled with the sudden, abrupt demand to be traded to a contender, feels almost insulting.

Instead of thanking Red Wings fans for their loyalty, he's punishing them with a ridiculous list.

Perhaps Larkin was never strong enough for the pressures that come leading the Red Wings. After all, he had big shoes to fill in the departure of greats like Nick Lidstrom and Steve Yzerman. Now, instead of leading a team to greatness, he'd prefer to be a subordinate on a much stronger cast. Larkin would rather follow the orders of the guy who nearly broke his neck than lead a team himself.

Yes, there were several times throughout his career where it seemed like he was the only one giving it his all. Yes, he played through several shifts injured in order to help his team. But what did that accomplish? Was that heart, or stupidity? Why not let your injuries heal and trust the team you lead to pick up the slack?

Larkin's legacy forever tarnished in Detroit

Dylan Larkin will never be remembered as the heart and soul guy who gave it his all. He won't be looked back on as a player who tried his best until he just couldn't take it anymore.

Larkin will be forever be remembered as the captain that gave up.

When the going got tough, Larkin got going. If he genuinely cared about the team and its fans, he would've made a public statement or explained his rationale. Perhaps fans would understand where he's coming from if he did something - anything - other than this.

If Dylan Larkin wants to be the fifth-best player on a team, that's fine.

But bowing out in this manner shows he was never strong enough to lead Hockeytown to glory.
