Between all the recent crazy news, the Detroit Red Wings revealed their home opener opponent. On Friday, October 2, 2026, the Red Wings will face off against the New York Rangers at home in Little Ceasar's Arena.

This home opener is a little different than home openers of the past. First and foremost, the Red Wings will have a new general manager. Whether that's an internal hire or someone on the outside remains to be seen, but it's certain that the team will approach the future with a new direction in mind.

Once that GM takes the helm, they've got a tidy bit of business they have to accomplish, starting with the trade of disgruntled soon-to-be-former captain Dylan Larkin. The new manager will also have to extend Simon Edvinsson, determine the fate of Alex DeBrincat and decide what direction is best for the organization moving forward.

Simple enough, right?

Well, things could always be worse. The New York Rangers, Detroit's home opener opponent, are in a much worse position long-term than the Red Wings right now.

Rangers struggling worse than Red Wings

Believe it or not, the Rangers are actually worse off than the Red Wings right now. The Rangers have committed to a "retool", but it's unclear what that means under general manager Chris Drury. It appears as if the team is still trying to be competitive but doesn't have the depth to do so. Sure, Mika Zibanejad still has it, but J.T. Miller fell off last season, posting just 53 points.

Is that Joe Veleno on the projected opening night lineup? Oh boy.

To make matters worse for the Rangers, their wing depth is shallow at best. Pavel Dorofeyev is their best winger, to be certain, but apart from an occasional output from Alexis Lafreniere, who else do they have? They traded away Vincent Trocheck but committed to 32-point Oliver Bjorkstrand and 27-point Gabe Perreault on their top-six.

The current offensive makeup is confusing, but it becomes even stranger when you take a look at their defense. Adam Fox is an elite defenseman and Vladislav Gavrikov does great in a shutdown role, but the depth is also lacking. Due to an arbitration agreement, they're paying Braden Schneider, their bottom pairing defenseman, $5.5M next season.

Igor Shesterkin is a fantastic goaltender, but, as we've witnessed over the last few seasons, he can only do so much to keep his team afloat.

Red Wings, Rangers made sparks fly last season

Last season, the Red Wings and Rangers faced off in a centennial showdown, ending the night in a bench-clearing brawl. The result was nothing short of cinema:

If the Red Wings can capture this energy on opening night, they've got a strong case to win. With that said, we've got two months and a handful of days to go before the regular season. Here's hoping that opening night has as much magic as this game
