Dylan Larkin rumors could turn into a pressure cooker for the Red Wings

The report surrounding Dylan Larkin that said he was demanding a trade could turn into a pressure cooker for the Detroit Red Wings as the offseason progresses. If we get closer to the NHL Draft and free agency without resolving this, then it's going to take over the Red Wings' offseason entirely.

Now that the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs have wrapped up, NHL general managers are preparing for the offseason that is right around the corner.

However, Steve Yzerman, the GM of the Detroit Red Wings, has arguably the most difficult challenge ahead of him. His captain, Dylan Larkin, has formally asked for a trade, and now Yzerman needs to find the best trade package that Larkin also agrees to.

Which makes things extremely difficult. To add to it, Detroit is a pressure cooker market, which means the more time that goes on, the more pressure Yzerman is going to feel the need to make the right move and make it fast

Yzerman is going to feel the pressure if the Larkin trade rumors drag on

With the 2026 NHL Draft coming up in just under two weeks, that could very well be the first chance that Yzerman has to try and make a move. The team to watch at the draft would be the Florida Panthers, who could offer the ninth overall pick. Which would then give Yzerman a first-round pick to work with.

If a deal doesn't materialize on the draft floor, Yzerman needs to shift his focus to the absolute start of free agency. Getting this trade wrapped up early in July is vital. If the front office is constantly stressing over the logistics of moving their captain, they risk missing out on the top tier of the open market. Free agency moves at a lightning pace, and teams cannot afford to be distracted.

By getting the deal done and settling the Larkin situation right away, Yzerman can turn his full attention to the available free agents. It allows Detroit to be aggressive, target key pieces to reboot the core, and avoid being left behind while other teams lock down the best talent available. The pressure is on to get this sorted before the market passes them by and they end up in a significantly worse situation.
