The Detroit Red Wings shocked fans when they decided not to give forward Carter Mazur a qualifying offer on Monday, making him an unrestricted free agent. That said, this does not automatically mean his time with the organization is finished.
Detroit still has the option to bring him back on a new contract, and general manager Steve Yzerman could view him as a potential depth option heading into the 2026-27 season.
Mazur’s development with the Griffins
Over the last three seasons, Mazur quickly became an important player for the Griffins and showed why Detroit was excited about selecting him in the draft. During the 2023-24 season, his first full year in the American Hockey League, Mazur played in 60 games and recorded 17 goals and 20 assists for a total of 37 points. He also made an impact during Grand Rapids’ playoff run that season, producing eight points in nine postseason games while showing his ability to perform in high-pressure situations.

Throughout his time with Grand Rapids, Mazur has been one of the organization’s more productive young forwards. In 102 career AHL games, he has totaled 39 goals and 35 assists for 74 points. His development has been somewhat slowed by injuries, which have limited his ability to put together a full season and consistently push for a permanent NHL role. However, when healthy, Mazur has shown the skill and compete level that made him a promising prospect for Detroit.
Why Detroit passed on a qualifying offer
The decision not to give Mazur a qualifying offer likely came down to the Red Wings wanting more flexibility with their roster and salary cap situation. Instead of committing to a required contract amount, Detroit can now negotiate with Mazur as a free agent if they believe he still fits into their plans. This gives both sides more options moving forward.

For Steve Yzerman and the Red Wings, bringing Mazur back on a one or two-year contract could still make sense. Detroit has been looking for players who can provide energy, defensive responsibility, and toughness in the bottom six, and Mazur has many of those qualities. He may not project as a top-line scorer in the NHL, but his style of play could make him valuable as a fourth-line winger or as an extra forward competing for NHL minutes.
Where Mazur fits into Detroit’s future plans
Heading into the 2026-27 season, Mazur’s path to the NHL involves battling for a depth role during training camp. With younger players continuing to push for roster spots, every position will be competitive, but Mazur has the type of game that can earn the trust of coaches. His ability to play physically, create pressure on opponents and contribute in different situations gives him a chance to remain in the organization.

Mazur’s story in Detroit may not be over
Not receiving a qualifying offer was a setback for Mazur, but it does not necessarily mark the end of his time with Detroit. The Red Wings still have the opportunity to bring him back, and if both sides see a fit, Mazur could still have a chance to establish himself as a reliable NHL depth forward in Detroit’s lineup.
