Detroit Red Wings march all the way back; Senators hit home run in OT
The Detroit Red Wings came out against the Senators in Sweden and surely dropped the ball. It was a tough situation early on, considering the Red Wings spotted Ottawa a four-goal lead to start. The Senators were able to continue piling it on, but things changed.
The Detroit Red Wings came marching back in the second period and tied things up at four, but this did not change the early frustration provided by Detroit’s play. Watching the Red Wings continue to play this way is extremely maddening. The theme is the same: an inability to score first and get ahead early in games.
On the bright side, Lucas Raymond scored in the second period, which was good to see. He buried one in front of the home fans in Sweden. For Raymond, it must have been nice to score in front of some family that was in the crowd to see him.
The Red Wings’ ability to battle back was incredible. They may not have been able to start or get ahead early, but they tilted the ice majorly during the game’s second frame and came all the way back. However, in the end, it was not enough.
Detroit Red Wings fall to Senators after baseball-like goal in overtime.
The Red Wings were able to come all the way back during the second period, but in the third period, they were unable to score. Ottawa and Detroit battled both teams, trading hits and scoring chances. That led to overtime and the demise of the Red Wings.
While James Reimer was rough early on, he was able to snap back into form and play better as the game went on. This included some big-time stops during overtime. However, the Red Wings were not able to earn the two points.
The Senators scored the overtime goal when Tim Stützle batted the puck out of the air, beating Reimer to make it a 5-4 game in favor of Ottawa. The Red Wings suffered a tough loss, but they were able to salvage a point by battling back and forcing overtime.
The rundown…
Detroit’s start was abysmal. Ottawa got ahead early, and some inferior defensive play did not help the Red Wings in any way. The defense core had a tough start early, allowing the Senators to get out to their early lead, which seemed insurmountable after 20 minutes of play.
On the flip side, the team was able to show the ability to finish. It’s something they have struggled with in the past but have seemingly improved in 2023-24. They marched back and tied the game up. The issue came when they could not score in the third period or overtime to finish the win and secure two points.
Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin left the game with an injury after a tough faceoff draw. It looked like he tweaked something in his knee. He returned to the game and played like a bat out of hell. You could tell he wanted to find a way to win.
Especially since Larkin was not exactly enthralled about the trip to Sweden. Larkin thought that the trip would cause problems down the road for the Red Wings because it was such a big travel ordeal to get overseas. While the experience itself was not a problem with Larkin, the way it broke up the schedule will make it interesting to see how this plays out.
Detroit earned a point in the overtime loss to the Senators. The good news is they’ll have a chance to earn more points against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday.
