The Detroit Red Wings have to deal with the unfortunate reality that is creeping over the horizon. They will have to start paying their young stars, and it’s best that the team gets it out of the way when it comes to Moritz Seider.

It’s not necessarily something that the Detroit Red Wings have to do this year, as he is under contract through the 2023-24 season. He’s a restricted free agent after that, but the Red Wings should just punch out a contract extension now.

It sounds so easy just to sit here and write it. Hammer out an extension, pay the man, and be done with it. The issue is that the Red Wings have to be smart. They want to lock up Seider and get him on a long-term deal, but they need to avoid a situation like what the Toronto Maple Leafs have going on.

There’s no need to have all of their money and cap space tied into four players, but make no mistake; the Red Wings need to figure something out regarding Seider, especially with how big of a role he will play with the team moving forward.

Detroit Red Wings should hammer out a Moritz Seider extension.

The Detroit Red Wings are going to have to pay up. The former Calder Trophy winner and potential future Norris candidate will be someone the team has to pay. Seider is coming from the 2022-23 season, where he played in 82 games, scoring five goals and adding 37 assists for 42 total points.

In his 2021-22 Calder Trophy-winning season, Seider came out and posted seven goals and 43 assists for 50 total points. Besides the offense, Seider has been a force defensively and is looking to keep improving his physicality and taking things to another level.

Throwing this all together and coming up with a contract, it seems like the time to go out and lock up Seider on a big-time deal. Sign him to that 8-year deal now and be done with it. Seider seems like an 8x$8m or 8×8$8.5m type of player.

One of the players that came to mind was Miro Heiskanen and his eight-year, $67.6 million deal. It’s worth $8.45 million annually and seems like a good number, or at least in that range. The Red Wings need to figure out the right move, locking up Seider on some contract that kicks in for next season.

It may be something for this upcoming season, but it needs to be a priority for the Red Wings this season.
