Detroit Red Wings: Moritz Seider looking to bring more physicality

The Detroit Red Wings must look for improvements in their young defender in the coming seasons. It sounds like Moritz Seider will make improvements already, as he has shown more physicality in the 2023 IIHF World Championships, even if it got him into some trouble.

The 6-foot-4, 203-pound German defender is aiming to be a better player for the team overall. Detroit Red Wings General Manager (GM) Steve Yzerman has made it clear that he wants the team to be more physical.

Not that physicality has been a big problem for Seider, but he is already looking to continue making strides in terms of his level of play. He has the chance to really elevate his game and become one of the top-tier defenders in the league.

He’s already been crowned the Rookie of the Year by winning the Calder Trophy, but he might just be able to get himself a Norris as he progresses through the big leagues. Seider’s looking to continue his rise to NHL stardom.

On top of his rise of play overall. The Red Wings want to be more physical, and the team’s defense core has not had that level of physicality since the days of Niklas Kronwall and Brad Stuart roaming the blue line.

While Kronwall was only 6-foot, 194 pounds with Seider and his mammoth stature, he’s aiming to bring that level of physicality and ability to throw the body around. He’s already known for his reverse hits and vicious body checks, but now he’s aiming to show it off more.

If he can continue to tap into offense, piecing together five goals and 37 assists for 42 total points in 2022-23. The big thing for the Red Wings and Seider moving forward is going to be more consistency in his play overall.

The Red Wings are trying to continue moving in the right direction, and a great third-year from Seider will help them establish their defense core. On top of that, Simon Edvinsson is on the way up to the NHL, looking to settle in after making his debut in 2022-23.

Having Seider settle in and coming into his own will only allow the Red Wings’ defense core to show a ton of growth. Having a younger player who just went through the transition help, Edvinsson is going to be huge, especially if Edvinsson can also help with the teams’ physicality woes.

The Red Wings’ future is bright, and having someone like Seider coming back with an even more physical presence and Edvinsson right behind him is excellent for them moving forward.
