Detroit Red Wings: Simon Edvinsson returned to AHL after first NHL stint
The Detroit Red Wings have just one game left in the 2022-23 season, but they have returned Simon Edvinsson to the AHL level, and he will not return to the NHL level. His nine-game trial run is complete, and he was returned to the Grand Rapids Griffins.
It was great for the Detroit Red Wings to call up Simon Edvinsson and give the youngster a chance to make his debut and get some NHL games under his belt after a big season in Grand Rapids. They made the right move, as it showed why Edvinsson was ready for the call-up.
He found ways to get involved, and albeit made some mistakes, he showed flashes of excitement that should transcend into next season quite well. A year of development in the AHL under his belt, capped off with nine games in a Red Wings uniform, is a pretty stellar first season in North America for Edvinsson.
While he may not have scored a ton or added plenty of points, the value he showed on the ice as a defender was impressive. He made his presence known, using his physicality and massive frame to force opposing forwards to the outside, win some puck battles, and clear out the net front.
Detroit Red Wings Simon Edvinsson was nothing short of exciting.
Edvinsson played in his nine-game stint to avoid burning a year of his entry-level deal. In that time, he averaged 17:04 in ice time per night. He tallied two goals, both mysteriously finding the back of the net through traffic in front.
He was a minus-7 in his stint and picked up 12 penalty minutes. It’s a knock on him so far, but he’s got plenty of time to get used to the NHL level. He took a couple of tough ones, but at times, it will happen.
Edvinsson showed the Red Wings fans why he will be essential to the team’s defense core moving forward. He’s a big piece of the puzzle for Detroit, and the 6-foot-4, 198-pound defender, made the most of his opportunity to don the winged wheel uniform.
There are plenty of reasons to be excited about what he will bring to the table. It may be a few months, but when training camp rolls around, expect the “Simon Edvinsson will make the opening night roster” articles to start flowing.
The kid has a bright future and will be exciting to watch for years to come on a blueline that already features Moritz Seider, a true fan-favorite amongst the Red Wings faithful.
