Detroit Red Wings beach the Sharks in overtime with 3-2 victory

The Detroit Red Wings came into Tuesday night’s game looking to get back on track. They faced the San Jose Sharks in a very winnable game. However, that is not the case for the Red Wings in 2022-23.

Even though the Detroit Red Wings were able to come back on top and secure a victory, it required extra time as the Sharks were able to force overtime. Ultimately Detroit was able to close things out in what could have been a frustrating loss.

The Red Wings have struggled to finish in games all year long but were able to do so against the Sharks on Tuesday night. They were able to grab two points here and get themselves back in the win column.

1st Period

All-in-all, the first period was pretty quiet. Neither team had the edge. It’s no slight to the Detroit Red Wings, who came out and got it done. They were able to get the offense working and create scoring chances but could not convert.

The Red Wings clouded the front of the net with cover and got shots through on Reimer. They had a good power play before the end of the period and created scoring chances but couldn’t finish.

In their own zone, the Red Wings gave up a couple of dangerous scoring chances but were able to emerge unscathed. Shots were tied 12-12 after the first 20 minutes of play. Both teams traded blows, but nothing came of it.

2nd Period

The Red Wings were able to draw first blood in this game as they picked up a goal during the second period. It was Dylan Larkin who was able to set up the team’s first tally. After getting the puck from Flip Hronek, Larkin was able to carry it up to the top of the zone and give time for Adam Erne to get to the front of the net and set up a screen.

Larkin carried it around the top of the zone and then turned and fired while parallel with the net. The shot was re-directed by Erne, who beat Reimer for the goal. Larkin’s assist was good for his 400th career point.

A few minutes later, Timo Meier evened the game up 1-1. A shot from the point that he tried to re-direct took him behind the net. He corralled the puck and went for the wrap-around. He was able to land the bank shot off of Ville Husso’s pad to beat him and get the puck into the back of the net.

Later in the second, Michael Rasmussen helped the team grab the lead once again and make it 2-1. Rasmussen carried the puck into the zone and rimmed it around the boards before taking an awkward hit from a Sharks defender. He recovered quickly and caught a feed from Jordan Oesterle, who hustled to the puck Rasmussen had rimmed around the boards.

Oesterle got the puck to Rasmussen at the top of the circle before he turned, surveyed the front of the net, and sent a wrist shot on goal that beat Reimer and helped make things 2-1 in favor of Detroit.

With just six seconds to go in the second period, the Sharks were able to tie things up. They caught the Red Wings players on the ice for quite some time. They were peppering Husso with shots. Eventually, he coughed up a rebound that Logan Couture was able to fire on net, scoring after it bounced off Moritz Seider into the net.

The game would stay 2-2 heading into the break, with the Sharks leading in shots and the Red Wings looking for redemption after a tough goal right before the buzzer.

3rd Period

The third period was quiet as well. Both teams traded scoring chances, but no one was able to cross the finish line and grab a lead in regulation. The Red Wings finished regulation ahead 29-27 in terms of shots on goal, but the Sharks would not go down easy. Things got a bit physical as both teams were throwing the body around, but the Red Wings stayed the course and avoided any poor penalties.

Overtime

Just 25 seconds into overtime, an offensive zone face-off led to a Red Wings goal. Michael Rasmussen helps create the scoring chance with a good jump off the face-off. Andrew Copp was able to corral the loose puck in the crease and bang it home for a Red Wings goal. Copp’s tally would give the Red Wings the victory over the Sharks in overtime.

The Red Wings are off until Thursday. They will head to Montreal to face off against the Canadiens in a road match-up, looking to string together a couple of wins before the All-Star Break.
