The Detroit Red Wings traded for St. Louis Blues goalie, and Finland native, Ville Husso. But what does the trade symbolize in terms of the goalie competition?
The Detroit Red Wings organization seems to be gaining momentum into a big turn-around each and every day. You see the prospects that they have, the talent they bring in, and you know It’s just a matter of combining both the young talent and the veteran talent to help round out the roster.
Last season we saw what Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider are capable of. And more than likely, unless something drastically changes, we will get a look at another top prospect this season. Now, I’m not sure who we will see this year, but I have a gut feeling that we will at least see Jonatan Berggren. But they could also look to give Simon Edvinsson a chance as well.
Now, as we all know, the forwards that we currently have are more than capable of playing at a high level. Unfortunately, we haven’t had the chance to see them really show off what they can do because of the dump-and-chase play style Jeff Blashill ran. This year will be different.
I expect that Derek Lalonde will look to develop a scheme based around the youth and speed of this roster which should benefit the Red Wings forwards a great deal. Additionally, Lalonde mentioned in his introductory press conference that he wanted to play a tight defensive game. He wants to close gaps before they even have a chance to look for a pass. Knowing the defensive system they like to run, and the players we have on defense right now, I see a lot of success in the future.
The question still remains though, what are they going to do at the goalie position? They just traded for Ville Husso, they have top prospect, Sebastian Cossa who’s been reportedly doing really well at training camp, and they still have Alex Nedeljkovic.
So, what’s the plan for the Red Wings at the goalie spot?
When I ask that question I’m sure you think I’m crazy because it’s obvious that they will run Husso and Nedeljkovic out there for the upcoming season. But, what should we expect from them this season? That’s what I intend on answering.
