The Detroit Red Wings had two rookies this past season really show up: Lucas Raymond, and Moritz Seider. Raymond started the season off incredibly well, but was unable to keep that pace. Seider on the other hand dominated all season long finishing with 40 assists as a rookie defenseman. So, now the question isn’t “Is he good?”, It’s “How good is he?”

The Detroit Red Wings have drafted very well over the past couple seasons only missing on a few prospects. But even then, that’s not really a fair term for guys like Joe Veleno, Filip Zadina, and Michael Rasmussen who haven’t really gotten a fair chance under a good coach. But that’s not much of an excuse because Moritz Seider seemed to make it work.

Moritz Seider is competing for the Calder trophy this year after finishing the season playing in all 82 games for the Red Wings. Additionally, he had seven goals and 43 assists for 50 points as well as carrying 23:00 minutes a night on the ice.

He was truly something to behold this past season. I mean, watching him do some of the things he did with the puck was nothing short of spectacular. From being able to handle the puck through traffic and finding the pass on the streaking forward, or getting a shot off from the perimeter and through traffic in front of the net. He just found a way to always make an impact and that’s what makes him such a special player.

So, after witnissing his first NHL season, the question needs to be asked- Where  does he rank amongst other NHL defenseman?
