The Detroit Red Wings’ offense was stifled during every period of their 2-0 loss to Nashville.

The Predators got on the board first, after scoring a quick power play goal 13 minutes into the first. The next (and last) goal for Nashville came halfway through the first period. The Wings successfully challenged Nashville’s third goal for goaltender interference, and remained in striking distance. However, the Predators were more than happy to sit on their two goal lead, and leaned on defense in the third to complete the shutout.

It’s been six periods of hockey since the Red Wings’ last goal (the last was an empty netter against the Hurricanes a week ago).  Detroit had over 30 shots on goal, but they failed to cash in on any of their chances. Darren Helm had three great scoring chances himself (a breakaway and a couple of shots right in front of the net),  but failed finish on any of them.

The lack of support goals for goaltender Thomas Greiss continued in this one. Despite the loss,  Greiss had a solid night in net, with 32 saves and a save percentage of .940.

The special teams also struggled in the loss. The power play went 0 for 3, with the first two looking especially rough. Zone entry continues to be a major pain for this Detroit squad. The penalty kill gave up a goal on two tries.

Detroit looks to kickstart their offense in their rematch with the Predators this Thursday.

Game Notes

  • Filip Zadina continues to look quite good, with clean zone entries (something Detroit doesn’t get much of) and some aggressive shots.
  • Despite not popping out on the scoresheet, Michael Rasmussen has quietly played a couple of great games, and looked pretty good in most of his shifts, using his size and strength to win some battles near the net. Perhaps they should call some other guys up to get a look?
  • Robby Fabbri was also skating with some speed, maybe playing with a shot of confidence after his hat trick against Dallas.
