Emmitt Finnie rewarded after a strong rookie year
Finnie was a little-known commodity entering Red Wings’ training camp in the fall. After a strong preseason, he, Axel Sandin-Pellikka and Michael Brandsegg-Nygard made the opening roster.
From there, all Finnie did was impress with his tenacious effort and relentless style of play. Not bad for a seventh-round pick in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. He was the only one of the three rookies to skate in all 82 games and ended his rookie season with 13 goals and 17 assists for 30 points. He was tied for 14th in points among all rookie skaters.
This will be the 20-year-old’s first time representing Canada at a national event -- a big honor for a player who was once considered a long shot to ever get an opportunity at the NHL level. The Red Wings have Finnie under contract for the next two years at $821,667 AAV before he becomes a restricted free agent following the 2027-28 season.
Cam Talbot plays the vet role in Switzerland
On the other side of things, veteran Cam Talbot joins Team Canada at the IIHF World Championships for the second time in his career. The first time was during the 2016 tournament, where Canada claimed gold. Talbot appeared in eight games, going 7-1-0 with a 1.25 goals-against average and a 0.940 save percentage -- a huge factor in Canada's win.
The other two goalies accompanying Talbot in Switzerland will be Columbus Blue Jackets netminder Jet Greaves and Nashville Predators 2025 second-round pick Jack Ivankovic. Greaves is 25, while Ivankovic is 18, so Team Canada may rely on Talbot’s experience during this tournament.
The 38-year-old operated behind John Gibson this season, appearing in 34 games while posting a record of 12-9-6, a GAA of 3.19 and a SV% of 0.883%. Talbot is set to be an unrestricted free agent on July 1 and seems unlikely to return to Detroit for a third season. With a loaded goaltending pipeline that includes Sebastian Cossa and Michal Postava in Grand Rapids, the Red Wings are likely to move on from Talbot in favor of a younger option behind Gibson.
