As we get set for this new week, here are some things to look forward to--not only as a Detroit Red Wings fan, but also for everything happening in the hockey world.

Each week will preview the upcoming week within the hockey world. There will be an emphasis on the Detroit Red Wings, but it will not focus solely on the organization. The Red Wings' season may be over, but there's plenty to look forward to this offseason with this organization.

We hope that this recurring segment helps hockey fans prepare for the upcoming week. Since hockey has become such a global sensation, it's easy to get lost in the mix.

This week, we get to review the American Hockey League (AHL), the development league of the National Hockey League (NHL), along with the upcoming NHL playoff games, and the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Men's World Hockey Championship.

AHL playoff action, no stakes for Detroit Red Wings organization as Grand Rapids Griffins make early exit

While many fans hoped for a stellar playoff performance, especially with the arrival of highly coveted prospects Michael Brandsegg-Nygård and Axel Sandin-Pellikka, it wasn't meant to be.

With such an influx of new talent, the Grand Rapids Griffins struggled to find cohesion. Rarely did the Griffins put up much of a fight in this series (except their season finale).

The Grand Rapids Griffins were eliminated from postseason contention after losing 5-4 in double overtime to the Texas Stars on Friday, May 9. This brought the Calder Cup hopes to a close for the Red Wings' affiliate.

The remaining AHL teams did not stop for Mother’s Day, though, as there are three games on the docket today. So, if the mom in your life is a hockey fan, there will be a lot of hockey for her to watch!

IIHF Men’s World Championship has plenty of Detroit Red Wings players to keep an eye on

The 2025 IIHF Men’s World Championship continues this week with several Detroit Red Wings in the mix. Rising star Lucas Raymond, Erik Gustafsson, and Simon Edvinsson represent Team Sweden, Moritz Seider will be donning Germany’s sweater, Marco Kasper is playing for Team Austria, and prospect Brandsegg-Nygård suited up just in time to bully Seider as he played for Team Norway.

Sweden is sharing hosting duties with Denmark, so it was an easy sell for the Swedish trio. It appears that Raymond is in the top six, and on a line with fellow budding Anaheim Ducks star Leo Carlsson, for Team Sweden, while Edvinsson and Gustafsson are serving as the bottom defensive pair.

The preliminary round continues through May 20th, and the top four teams in each group will advance to the quarterfinals.
