Sebastian Cossa made a save fans are calling the best of the year

The Detroit Red Wings' netminders haven't been consistent in 2025-26, so the time to call on Sebastian Cossa is imminent following one heck of a save.

Sebastian Cossa looks like the future of the Detroit Red Wings if his statistics in Grand Rapids say anything. Cossa has appeared in 11 games so far for the Griffins, with a 10-1 record, a 1.56 GAA, a 0.943 save percentage, and two shutouts.

The Griffins may be a great hockey team, but Cossa has been fueling their epic season so far. He's giving fans confidence enough, thanks to those legendary numbers. But one save he made in a recent game against the Toronto Marlies drives home why he needs to be in Hockeytown.

Justin Holl, one name Red Wings fans are familiar with, mishandled the puck and had it stolen from him, setting up a shot on goal from close range, right in front of a wide-open net. Cossa wasn't even in position, but you can't blame him, given Holl's gaffe.

Once the Marlies player took the open shot, Cossa realized what was going on, slid in front of the crease, and made a diving save that the broadcast dubbed the "save of the year." The save also kept the score tied at two apiece with 12:16 left in the third period.

The save ended up as the difference-maker, with the Griffins winning that game before playing the Marlies again the following day, and snagging another victory.

Sebastian Cossa will be with the Detroit Red Wings if he keeps making saves like that

To say the Red Wings' netminders have been bad is an understatement. Collectively, John Gibson and Cam Talbot have a 0.877 save percentage, a 3.29 GAA, zero shutouts, and a 0.414 quality starts percentage.

Gibson has yet to look impressive, while Talbot has been inconsistent. Of the two, Talbot has been better, with a 0.884 save percentage, a 3.01 GAA, and a 0.571 quality starts percentage. As for Gibson, he's struggling with a 0.869 save percentage, a 3.58 GAA, and a 0.267 quality starts percentage.

If the Red Wings look like they're either playoff-bound or seriously contending as the season wears on in 2026 and Cossa is still making highlight-reel "saves of the year" and holding opponents to two or fewer goals per game, then when does Steve Yzerman finally realize his best goalie may be in Grand Rapids?

Cossa has struggled at the NHL level when given a chance, stopping 12 of 14 shots during his lone appearance with the Red Wings in 2024-25. He also looked outmatched in the preseason, but Cossa has clearly grown in the two months since the 2025-26 campaign began, and his latest sensational save reminded everyone of that.
