The Detroit Red Wings have traded goaltender Sebastian Cossa to the Utah Mammoth for the 23rd overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.

Cossa has been a name that has been swirling around the NHL rumor mill. He was linked to several different teams, and now he is traded to the Mammoth, who are looking for a young, reliable goalie.

Red Wings move on from Cossa but move back into the first round of the NHL Draft

This is a trade that Steve Yzerman and the Red Wings could come to regret. Cossa is still a young, promising goalie who could have been a stopgap for the organization before the other goaltending prospects are NHL-ready.

Cossa, 23, has only played in one NHL game so far in his young career. That one game was a win, where he showed promise and his true potential.

This past season, he didn't get the opportunity at the NHL level. He spent the year with the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL. In 39 games, he had a 26-8-4 record along with a 2.33 goals against average (GAA) and a .915 save percentage (SV%). It was an incredible season for Cossa.

However, now after this trade, he will get his first real shot at the NHL level backing up Karel Vejmelka.

Red Wings select J.P. Hurlbert with pick No. 23

For the Red Wings, they were able to make JP Hurlbert's dreams come true after trading for the 23rd overall pick. He grew up a Red Wings fan like his dad and grandfather. Hurlbert is committed to playing for Michigan University before he makes the jump to join the Red Wings organization.

Although they traded Cossa, which could be a tough pill to swallow within the fan base, Yzerman zeroed in on a target that he wanted in Hurlbert and pushed to get the deal done. This could be a trade that he eventually regrets because of how good Cossa looks early in his career. However, if Hurlbert reaches his top-six potential, it will balance out the trade.
