"Stunned fans" is probably the right phrase here, since the Detroit Red Wings biggest addition on Day 2 of the 2025 NHL Draft was goaltender John Gibson. In case you haven't heard, Gibson landed in Hockeytown in a trade that included a future second and fourth-round pick, plus Petr Mrazek.
Can't beat that, right? But Gibson, one of the NHL's more experienced netminders, wasn't the only addition today. The Wings had a plethora of Day 2 picks. And if you don't know them yet, do yourself a favor and check out some of my quick takes. You might learn a thing or two.
Round 2 - 44th: Eddie Genborg, LW/RW
This was a pick I liked a lot. Genborg is a versatile winger, who can play either left or right wing. His 6'2, 205-lb frame is already raring to go for pro hockey, and he destroyed the competiton in J20 Nationell, compiling 19 goals and 34 points in 28 games. This is the exact player I want in the system to keep an eye on as he develops in Sweden.
Round 3 - 75th: Michal Pradel, G
Ha! Another netminder named Michal. With a 6'5, 198-lb build, he's the type of player you gamble on and about five years from now, you may have a franchise netminder. That's if Sebastian Cossa and Michal Postava don't get there first. Anyway, Pradel played well across 14 USHL contests, snagging an 0.899 save percentage, a shutout, and a 2.41 GAA.
Round 4 - 109th: Brent Solomon, F
At 6'0, 172-lb, Brent Solomon needs to grow into his frame. But that's the case with a lot of mid-to-late round prospects, so there's no concern there. He played in eight regular season games for the USHL's Sioux Fall Stampede and scored four goals and six points in eight games.
Round 4B - 119th: Michal Svrcek, C/LW
He's got a compact, 5'11, 190-lb build, and he's a player who'll bring a lot of energy to his team. Svrcek also averaged a point per game in Sweden's J20 Nationell, snagging 30 of them and 14 goals.
Round 5 - 140th: Nikita Tyurin, D
Nikita Tyurin's known for being a puck mover, and one with a brewing two-way game. He put up 20 points and four goals in 50 contests in the MHL last season, and that number should increase since it looks like he's returning to the lower division again for 2025-26.
Round 6 - 172nd: Will Murphy, D
At 6'4, 209 lbs, Will Murphy's using his massive frame to his advantage. He's nothing more than a defensive defenseman who will wreak havoc and cause problems for opponents. This is the exact high-energy glue player you want to see your team take a chance on.
Round 7 - 204th: Grayden Robertson-Palmer, C
Another prospect with a decent compact build, and he fell to the seventh round because he never reached juniors, the USHL, or any of those higher leagues that you see from most of the top prospects. Still, he's a point per game player with playmaking skills. That's the kind of player you take a chance on late.
