The 24-year-old Tuomisto, selected by the Red Wings in the second round (35th overall) in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, led the American Hockey League’s Grand Rapids Griffins blueliners this season in assists (24), and points (27) in 67 regular season games. penalty minutes (54), and shots (109) in 67 regular-season games.
The 6-foot-5, 210-pound defenseman also appeared in two Calder Cup Playoff games with the Griffins. The statistics would suggest that Tuomisto has improved as player. During the 2023-24 campaign with the Griffins, he appeared in 50 regular season games and scored 17 points (five goals, 12 assists). He scored 10 more points and doubled his amount of assists.
Tuomisto spent his college days at the University of Denver, where he collected 20 points in 59 games from 2020-2022. He was also a member of the Pioneers' NCAA Division I championship squad from 2022.
In the past couple of weeks, a lot of questions were raised as to whether Tuomisto was a legitimate prospect
GM Steve Yzerman didn't appear to be all that enthusiastic about the kid, implying that he needs to be a lot quicker to stand a chance in today's NHL. But the fact that Detroit did re-sign him shows that they are—at the very least—acknowledging that he has made some gains.
Tuomisto is physical, strong, and he has an NHL-caliber shot. Again, the issue is whether he can work on his pace to keep up as an NHL defender. With that said, going into this offseason, Tuomisto should be grateful. He's already 24-years-old, and his window is closing quick. So appreciate this opportunity while it's here and try to make the most out of it.
