The Detroit Red Wings make their first splash at free agency, signing forward Viktor Arvidsson to a two-year, $5M per year contract.
Sources say the Detroit Red Wings are targeting Viktor Arvidsson on a two year deal.
July 1, 2026Arvidsson capped off a great season with the Boston Bruins in 2025-26, scoring 25 goals and 29 assists for 54 points in 69 games. This move fills the void left from the departure of players like James van Riemsdyk, who scored 15 goals last season.
One of the top goals for general manage Steve Yzerman this offseason is improving the team's offense. Last year, the Red Wings ended the season with an awful -17 goal differential. With soon-to-be-former captain Dylan Larkin on his way out, adding Arvidsson to the team helps to recoup some extra scoring in his absence.
What the Red Wings get from Arvidsson
Arvidsson the kind of player that can be moved up and down the lineup as he's needed. Whether he's flanking Lucas Raymond on the top line or assisting on the third line, he's a do-it-all forward with some scoring punch for any line he joins. Arvidsson has scored 20 goals six times in his career,
Best of all, he's an even-strength merchant. 45 of Arvidsson's 54 points last season came at 5-on-5. For the Red Wings - a team that's struggled to produce at even-strength - Arvidsson is an excellent acquisition.
Now, that said, the Swedish forward is 33 years old. He's going to come with a little bit of tread and shouldn't be expected as a top-scorer on the team. Still, the journeyman winger has been all around the league in his career with over 682 career games under his belt. That kind of wisdom over that career gives Arvidsson plenty he can share with Detroit's younger core.
Steve Yzerman's vision this offseason
Signing Arvidsson shows that the Red Wings' priority this offseason centers around fixing even-strength scoring. Arvidsson is the perfect solution, but shouldn't be the only solution. Other names, like Eeli Tolvanen, can bring the Wings up in even-strength scoring as long as they're given the ice time to make it possible.
