March 23, 2026Sandin-Pellikka spent the last seven games as a healthy scratch for the Red Wings following the Justin Faulk trade. Before the trade, he struggled with inconsistency, putting up just three points since December 27, 2025. His ice time in that span dropped as well -- during the start of the season, Sandin-Pellikka managed around 18-20 minutes of ice time. Recently, however, his deployment has dropped down to 9-12 minutes a night, ending with a seven-game healthy scratch streak.
Conversations about giving the young defenseman more time to develop have increased greatly over the last few weeks. This move gives Sandin-Pellikka a chance to be a key difference-maker in the AHL and gives the Red Wings a little breathing room from a defensive standpoint.
Sandin-Pellikka will join an immensely talented Griffins roster on the hunt for a Calder Cup.
AHL trip not the end of the world for Sandin-Pellikka
Sending Sandin-Pellikka down to the AHL doesn't mean the Red Wings are giving up on him. Quite the opposite, actually. By sending Sandin-Pellikka down, they're promising the young Swede more opportunity to make an impact with major minutes. It's much more important to a defenseman's development to play him 20-22 minutes against top competition vs. 9-12 on a bottom-pairing role.
Sandin-Pellikka should be a major addition to the Griffins, bolstering an already strong corps of players like Erik Gustafsson and Ian Mitchell. The Griffins are currently second in AHL standings and have already clinched their spot for the playoffs. Getting Sandin-Pellikka prepared for the rigor of North American ice during the playoffs is imperative to Detroit's long-term success.
Red Wings have very thin margin of error moving fowrard
In addition, Detroit's margin for error has grown razor thin over the last handful of games. At this point in the season, it's hard to rely on a rookie to be a key difference-maker, as one minor mistake can spell the difference between a big win and a heartbreaking loss. This, again, isn't to say that Sandin-Pellikka is the sole contributor to the occasional error; it's more that the Red Wings are focused on contention over development at this point in time.
Sandin-Pellikka will almost certainly return to the Red Wings in due time. Whether that's at the end of this season or at the start of next will depend on his performance during the remainder of the season. Through 63 NHL games, he has six goals and 19 points. The offensive touch is certainly there; he just needs time to develop his defensive game.
