The Detroit Red Wings resume their season on Thursday night, where they are on the road taking on the Ottawa Senators. The team is in more than a good spot in terms of their playoff chances, but they have a chance to bolster their roster to ensure they clinch a spot and make a run to the Stanley Cup Final. Red Wings General Manager Steve Yzerman has two major needs that they reportedly want to address, one of them being a right-shot defenseman with term left on their contract.

The Red Wings have been linked to a variety of different right-shot defensemen, such as Justin Faulk of the St. Louis Blues and MacKenzie Weegar of the Calgary Flames. But there is now a new name linked to the Red Wings, one who could be joining them very soon.

On Wednesday night, the Vancouver Canucks sidelined Tyler Myers for their game against the Winnipeg Jets. The purpose of this move was for trade purposes, as Myers has to decide whether or not to accept a deal to a new team.

On Thursday, TSN NHL insider Darren Dreger reported that the belief is that the Red Wings are the team that Myers is weighing a trade for.

Tyler Myers reportedly weighing trade to Red Wings

Myers is not the name Red Wings fans were hoping for, especially after they missed out on Quinn Hughes and Rasmus Andersson this season. But, he does fill the role that the Red Wings need. Plus, he is under contract for one more season, where he carries a relatively affordable $3 million cap hit.

This season with the Canucks, Myers has one goal and seven assists to his credit through 57games. Myers does carry a -25 plus/minus rating, which is his worst since the 2013-14 season when he was with the Buffalo Sabres. But, it can be be credited to the Canucks overall, since they do hold the worst record in the entire league.

One advantage that Myers carries is his size, as he stands at 6-foot-8 and weighs 229 pounds. That could help on defense for Detroit, especially as they try to make it out of the tough Atlantic Division. On the year, Myers has 91 blocked shots and 65 hits to his credit.

If this trade is finalized, then the Red Wings will at least check off one of their needs heading into the final stretch of the season. The next item on their list is a second-line center who is under contract. The center market is rich with players that could help the Red Wings, but they are going to be costly. Vincent Trocheck of the New York Rangers, Elias Pettersson of the Vancouver Canucks, and Robert Thomas of the Blues have all been linked to Detroit, but they will all be expensive in terms of the trade market.

But now, with Myers potentially in the fold, the Red Wings can now focus resources on landing a much needed top center behind Dylan Larkin.
