In another reality, Eddie Genborg already made his debut for the Detroit Red Wings this season and is competing with Michael Brandsegg-Nygård for Rookie of the Year. In this reality, Genborg is still developing in Sweden. Until then, Detroit fans will have to impatiently wait for his arrival.

Genborg is coming into his own with Timrå IK of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL). In 14 games this season, the former second round pick has scored four goals and has four assists for a total of eight points. He's a physical threat in a league that doesn't typically prioritize this -- but that's what makes Genborg so special.

On paper, these numbers may not jump off the page, but it's important to note that the SHL is a low scoring, defensive league. Genborg's sustained during the Grand Rapids Griffins' playoff run last season -- an injury so bad that he couldn't walk all summer.

That's what makes this season in the SHL even more impressive.

Despite a summer without training, Genborg is still finding ways to contribute offensively, while continuing to show his physical and competitive edge.

It hasn't gone unnoticed, either.

Eddie Genborg earns huge role for Team Sweden

Genborg’s efforts have paid off well; he's been named as captain of Team Sweden for the upcoming Men’s under-20 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championships.

Genborg joins a list of both impressive and familiar names who have captained the U20 Swedish teams. 2006-07 featured Nicklas Bäckström and Filip Forsberg for both the 2012-13 and 2013-14 tournaments. Former Red Wing Jacob de La Rose served as captain the following tournament, in 2014-15.

More recently, Red Wings’ favorite waiver wire pickup, Andreas Englund, served as captain during the 2015-16 tournament. Then, there’s the guy who can’t be traded for Dylan Larkin as he’s too valuable to the Minnesota Wild and too old for Detroit fans to appreciate, Joel Eriksson Ek who captained the team in 2016-17. There are far too many others to include, but we’ll finish this segment on a high note with the 2024-25 tournament that saw everyone’s favorite dynamic, current Grand Rapids Griffins, defenseman Axel Sandin-Pellikka don the “C.”

Genborg is a well-balanced forward who enjoys creating offense just as much as he loves checking opponents into next week.

Never happy with the bit of success that he finds, Genborg chooses to rise to challenges and meets them head on, which is exactly what happened when he joined the Griffins for the end of their regular season. Genborg went from a bottom-six role to healthy scratch to top-six in just a few games with Grand Rapids. He quickly earned both the trust of both head coach Dan Watson and his teammates.

Fans both familiar and unfamiliar with Genborg will be in for a treat come World Juniors.
