Red Wings News: A deceptive opponent, no lineup changes...yet

The Detroit Red Wings can put their 5-0 shellacking behind them and prove that they're not the streaky team they have been to start the season.

The Detroit Red Wings can't let what might be the most deceptive team in hockey fool them. No, the Columbus Blue Jackets aren't what you would call a good group, but they came close to making the playoffs in 2024-25 and are right in the thick of things at the quarter-way mark.

Columbus is a solid team when they have the puck and defensively, shown by their 62 goals for, which ranks 17th in the NHL, and 66 against, which is 19th. The Blue Jackets are also coming into this one with momentum after upending the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday in an overtime thriller.

Zach Werenski and Adam Fantilli were heroes in that one, taking advantage of an ill-fated pass from Maple Leafs forward, Max Domi, and escaping with the win. That was good news for the Wings, who need to see the Leafs keep losing. But if what Ansar Khan reported on Friday holds true, the Wings could be in trouble.

No changes to the Detroit Red Wings' lineup after that big loss to New York?

Ansar Khan gave Red Wings fans an update they didn't want to see. After losing to the New York Islanders 5-0, you would think head coach Todd McLellan wouldn't roll with the same line combos and defense pairings, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

It's worth noting that he made a point specifically about goaltender. "Including who's starting in goal" should be enough to get Red Wings fans across the world to push the panic button. Maybe it's a smokescreen, but don't be surprised if you see Gibson in the net when the puck drops at 1:00 PM.

Should Gibson start this afternoon and allow four or more goals for what would be the eighth time this season in 13 rodeos, a growing contingent of fans will be calling for Sebastian Cossa. At this point, even a good game from Gibson may not be enough to change fans' opinions on his play.

Jake Tye of The Hockey News praised goaltending prospect Rudy Guimond. Tye wrote, "The (Moncton) Wildcats went on to capture the Gilles-Courteau Trophy as QMJHL champions and entered this season as the clear team to beat. Opponents are still struggling to solve Guimond, who has opened the year with a 10-3-1 record, a 2.39 GAA, and a .916 save percentage through 14 starts."

If you remember it right, Guimond was a sixth-round pick in 2023, taking 169th overall. The same draft in which the Red Wings took Emmitt Finnie in the seventh round at 201st overall. If Guimond keeps playing at a monster level and ultimately forges his way into Grand Rapids, then Finnie may not be the only late-round pick to don the Winged Wheel in a regular-season game. Guimond will try his hand in the NCAA next season at Harvard, and he'll be worth following.

We also know blueliner Moritz Seider is one of the most durable players in the NHL. Seider's the type of player who will light up opponents multiple times a game, get in front of just as many shots, and then pitch in offensively. A player with his style often has a tough time staying healthy, but Seider has yet to miss a game.

Michael Whitaker, also of The Hockey News, noted this, reminding fans that, "He recently skated in his 346th career NHL game, officially passing the previous record of 345 consecutive games that was set by John Ogrodnick for games to begin an NHL career with the Red Wings."

That's one heck of an accomplishment. And the Wings will need Seider's help today if they plan on getting back into the winning column against Columbus. It won't be long until we see if they are up for the challenge.
