Red Wings need to officially give up on trade acquisition following win over Preds
The Detroit Red Wings needed a big win to keep pace in the early goings of the Atlantic Division race, and they got one. But it also means something else.
A few days back, the rumor was that the Red Wings weren’t done with goaltender Ville Husso, but following their win over the Nashville Predators, that narrative has got to have changed. Earlier today, the Wings snagged a much-needed 5-2 win, and goaltender Alex Lyon continued to impress.
In this matchup, Lyon finished with 37 saves and a 0.949 save percentage to go with what has already been a 0.929 save percentage and a 2.11 GAA to kick off the 2024-25 season. Last year, Lyon broke out, but for older players who never saw much time in the NHL, it was okay to doubt whether he’d enjoy a similar performance this season.
Thankfully, we no longer need to doubt that unless he experiences some unforeseen drop-off. But I’ll tell you right now, it’s not going to happen. Lyon’s success is here to stay, and with Cam Talbot also on board, the Wings have their goaltending tandem, regardless of what the claim is.
Red Wings need to officially give up on Ville Husso right now
It didn’t take more than a partial game into the season for the Wings and everyone in Hockeytown to be reminded of just how bad of a goaltender Ville Husso is. At this point, he’s lower than Alexandar Georgiev (Colorado Avalanche) and Tristan Jarry (Pittsburgh Penguins), and that’s saying a lot, considering how horrible both netminders have been so far.
Following Talbot’s respectable play through three games and two starts, plus the clinic Lyon put on today, Husso should be the odd man out from here on out, and the Red Wings need to find another organization for him to continue his career. Right now, I wouldn’t even consider him to be viable organizational depth, and I don’t care how well he’s played so far in the AHL.
Another reason I’d like to see Husso traded right now is because a goaltender-needy team may overpay for him should they inquire for his services. Yeah, it might sound laughable to us, but we know Husso’s been a viable netminder before, and NHL executives know this.
Some may think he’s just a bad fit in Motor City, so he’ll definitely turn his career around elsewhere. Trust me, you see general managers do this all the time, regardless of the sport. Or, at least, as long as the player doesn’t have a ridiculous salary attached to their name, and that’s not the case with Husso.
