The Detroit Red Wings need to be active this offseason. They were simply not good enough this season to take the next step toward contending. With this in mind, they should be looking to bolster their roster this summer by any means necessary.

The good news is that it looks like general manager Steve Yzerman is already putting in the work. Per Bleacher Report, the Red Wings have now been connected to one of the NHL's top trade candidates. In a recent article for Bleacher Report, Lyle Fitzsimmons named the Red Wings as a top potential trade destination for Dallas Stars superstar forward Jason Robertson.

"Regardless, whomever is in control of the purse strings and the personnel decisions in Detroit would be well advised to consider bringing in a guy like Robertson after the latest dumpster fire of a playoff chase," Fitzsimmons wrote.

With the Red Wings looking to take that next step and become a playoff team, it would make a lot of sense for them to make a major push for Robertson this summer. He would give them another star forward to work with, which is a massive need for the Red Wings right now.

Robertson is entering the summer as a pending restricted free agent, which is why questions about his future in Dallas have come up. Therefore, if the Red Wings were to acquire the star forward, they would need to sign him to a new contract. Robertson is just 26 years of age. He is exactly the kind of player that the Red Wings should look to acquire and then sign to a long-term deal.

Where Robertson could fit in the Red Wings' lineup if acquired

If the Red Wings were the lucky team to acquire Robertson from the Stars, it would not be difficult to determine where he would fit in Detroit's lineup. It is no secret that the Red Wings need a star scoring winger to play on their first line with Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond. Acquiring Robertson would provide them with just that.

Robertson would also give the Red Wings another star to work with on their power play. This would make them a more significant threat in the Eastern Conference because of it.

Robertson's offensive totals from this season show exactly why he would be a fit on the Red Wings' first line and power play if brought in. In 82 games this season with the Stars, he recorded 45 goals and 51 assists for 96 points. He's recorded at least 80 points in each of his last four seasons, showing he's a consistent threat offensively. In 2022-23, he set career highs with 46 goals, 63 assists, and 109 points in 82 games.

This seems like a perfect fit for the kind of scoring the Red Wings need moving forward.
