The Detroit Red Wings and Dylan Larkin appear to be stuck at an impasse.
That’s hardly any news. But if there was any hope of finding a resolution to this matter any time soon, fans may have another thing coming.
During a recent appearance on NHL Network, insider Elliotte Friedman discussed the latest on the Larkin situation insofar as his trade request is concerned.
And what Friedman had to say wasn’t exactly the most encouraging bit of news.
“As it stands right now, it’s a staring contest.”
The infantilization of the situation reduces the standoff to risible proportions. It’s almost as if the Red Wings and Larkin’s people are just sitting across the table waiting for someone to just give up.
That has to be toughest part in all of this situation, as it doesn’t seem like anyone is going to blink.
The situation, unfortunately, reached a greater magnitude when it was expected that Larkin would expand his trade list to include other teams not currently on his 10-team list. The rationale behind the Red Wings’ desire to include other teams lies in the fact that Larkin’s chosen destinations are teams that have little to nothing to offer Detroit.
“Last week, on the weekend, I had heard Larkin was going to switch the list. And I think Detroit was under that impression, too.”
Friedman pointed out that Florida, Colorado and Vegas are just impossible to expect as serious players for Larkin.
So, the path forward might be for Dylan Larkin to consider other clubs eager to get on his list.
Red Wings hoping that Dylan Larkin agrees to deals with about three other clubs
As for the teams that are eager to make a deal happen, well, Friedman provided some insight into the clubs most willing to make something happen.
“I heard that Buffalo wants to get in on it bad. I’ve heard Montreal wants to get in on it. I’ve heard St. Louis wants to get in on it, LA wants to get in on it.”
But the most intriguing team of all has to be the Boston Bruins.
“I’ve heard that Boston is wondering, ‘Why aren’t we on it?’ Boston has been a good team historically and this year.”
All of the teams Friedman mentioned seem like sensible destinations. But there’s a major issue: Buffalo, Boston and Montreal are all division rivals. So, would Shawn Horcoff be willing to help out division rivals?
Unless the deal was such an overpay, and Larkin was willing to head to Buffalo, Boston or Montreal, the best hope would be that Dylan Larkin would accept a deal to say, St. Louis or Los Angeles.
But as things stack up right now, that’s not happening. So, the staring contest will continue until something forces things to change.
