Red Wings fans will have to put their Brady Tkachuk dreams on hold for now

A lot would need to happen for the Red Wings to secure a top-line division rival.

After the Ottawa Senators hung their "played four more games than the Detroit Red Wings" banner, rumors of captain Brady Tkachuk's departure began. Tkachuk struggled mightily during the series, failing to put up a single point against the Carolina Hurricanes. This poor production, coupled with a litany of controversies throughout the season, have led many to believe this will be Tkachuk's final season in a Senators jersey.

Daily Faceoff was the spark that started the fire, dropping an article about the Brady Tkachuk trade conversation. Even the Detroit Free Press got in on the action, with Helene St. James suggesting that the bruising power forward is a perfect fit with the Red Wings.

Unfortunately, rumors of Tkachuk's potential trade are on hold (for now). TSN's Bruce Garrioch revealed today that Tkachuk never discussed a potential trade with the organization.

"I feel like I've answered this hundreds of times that none of that I feel like I've never said," Tkachuk added. "None of those things ever came out of my mouth. And honestly, it's just getting frustrating."

Trade for Tkachuk not out of the realm of possibility

That said, "never discussed" and "not happening" are two completely different things. There's a very strong chance that Brady could follow in the footsteps of his brother Matthew and request a trade. His comments about Canadian media have led some to suggest he's grown tired of the scrutiny he faces with the Senators.

Had this been the only controversy Tkachuk faced this season, it would be seen as a non-issue. Unfortunately, his father's implied remarks about goaltender Linus Ullmark and a clip of Tkachuk laughing at a sexist joke directed at the Team USA Women's Hockey team only further bolstered scrutiny from hockey media.

Tkachuk still has two years left on his contract. He carries a full no movement clause, which means he would have to approve a trade, should he wish to leave the Senators.

What trading for Tkachuk would look like for the Red Wings

The Red Wings are in dire need of even-strength scoring. No other player in the league shot at the puck at a higher rate during 5v5 hockey than Tkachuk. Adding a player of Tkachuk's caliber to the roster would work wonders for the team's offense, giving Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond a consistent line mate to terrorize the rest of the NHL.

However, before fans get their hopes up, it's important to note that a lot needs to happen to facilitate a Tkachuk trade. First, Tkachuk would need to request a trade. Given recent frustrations, it's not an impossibility, but, until it's formally stated, little remarks and comments are meaningless. Next, the Senators would need to find a suitor that Tkachuk approves. Finally, that suitor (in the unlikely event it winds up being the Red Wings) would need to put together an offer suitable for a player of Tkachuk's caliber.

Now, again, this doesn't mean a trade is impossible. It just means a lot has to go right. It's not every day that a team trades their top-line franchise captain to a division rival. With two years left on his deal, it's entirely possible Tkachuk sticks around with the Sens for another season.

For now, Red Wings fans should temper their expectations on a Tkachuk trade.
