Red Wings call up goaltender following Talbot injury

Talbot's injury, per head coach Todd McLellan, isn't a serious one.

On Thursday night, the Detroit Red Wings announced that they recalled goaltender Michal Postava from the Grand Rapids Griffins under emergency conditions after Cam Talbot suffered an apparent injury. Per Ansar Khan of MLive, the injury is a "tweak", which means Talbot likely won't be out for long.

Postava appeared in 21 games with the Griffins this season, posting a 13-6-0 record, a 1.86 goals against average and a .932 save percentage. This is his first trip to the NHL in his career

The Red Wings signed the 24-year-old netminder on June 10, 2025 to a two-year entry-level contract. He spent the prior season with HC Kometa Brno in the Czech Extraliga. Postava, who went undrafted, will make his professional debut as the team's apparent backup against the Buffalo Sabres.

Red Wings look ahead

The Red Wings play back-to-back games this week, starting with the Buffalo Sabres Friday and the Philadelphia Flyers Saturday. As of right now, it's unclear whether or not the Red Wings will start John Gibson in both games. Should they choose to look for a second option, Postava will likely slot in during Saturday's bout.

Detroit has been riding starting goalie John Gibson hard as they try to force their way back into the playoff picture. He's started all 13 games following the Olympic break. He's left two games early: once on March 2 in a 4-2 win against the Nashville Predators and second on March 8 in a 3-0 win over the New Jersey Devils.

Should Postava make his NHL debut, it will be a great opportunity for general manager Steve Yzerman to understand what he has in the prospect pipeline. This move gives Sebastian Cossa a bit of time to take back the starter's role in Grand Rapids, as well. Recently, Cossa has had a bit of a cold streak, so any time he can start will be time he'll gladly take.

The Red Wings have seen their fair share of Griffins over the last few weeks following Dylan Larkin and Andrew Copp's respective injuries. If Postava starts Saturday's game, he will join Emmitt Finnie, Michael Brandsegg-Nygård and Axel Sandin-Pellikka as Red Wings skaters who made their NHL debuts this season.
