The term "outside noise" keeps getting floated around the Detroit Red Wings. Andrew Copp was the first to use the term. “We have to find a way to not let it weigh on us," he said last season. "We have to find a way to free ourselves up; as soon as you let the outside noise and you guys start to impact what we're doing in here, that's when issues start to happen.”
Then Red Wings CEO and owner Chris Ilitch said it in his interview with Bob Wojonowski. "I think a lot of it is just talking heads. To be frank, inside the organization, things are operating perfectly well. It’s a bit of amusement to hear and look at some of that stuff."
Now, a third "outside noise" quote has hit the Red Wings, this time from head coach Todd McLellan. "The outside noise through the summer and everything else that’s gone on, they’ve done a good job focusing on what they can control, and that’s the hockey part of it," McLellan began.
"And in my experience the last two weeks, that’s mostly true. You can certainly feel an awkwardness in the air at times, but the Red Wings’ players have been diligent this preseason."
Awkwardness is putting it mildly. The Red Wings have done their part, showing up for camp and participating in preseason games. But the front office (or lack thereof) has dropped the ball. Simon Edvinsson still, bafflingly, remains unsigned. The search for a new GM has all but stalled. Fans are getting frustrated -- and rightfully so.
The Red Wings are just going to have to get used to "outside noise" until this is settled.
Lack of progress from front office is baffling
The Red Wings (publicly) promoted Shawn Horcoff to the general manager role two years ago. Since then, Horcoff's sole move is the claim of Calgary Flames defenseman Andreas Englund off waivers. The fans have every right to be upset. Horcoff has had more than enough time to sign one of the most loyal Red Wings of recent memory to a deal. Edvinsson showed up to camp without a contract. He participated in practice despite knowing the risk of injury.
In return, he's stuck without a locker in the dressing room and no update on his contract save for a shallow statement from Horcoff.
Fortunately, it sounds like the rest of the locker room understands the situation. “We all have Simon’s back,” fellow defenseman Moritz Seider said, “but also we know it’s a hard situation for [interim GM Shawn Horcoff], as well. It’s obviously his first deal. I think it will be done eventually. I think we just have high hopes and a good mood. Just got to remind everyone that we’re all in the same team in the end, and I think it will be worked out.”
There's still hope that the deal gets done before opening night. But, with puck drop just three days away, a lot will need to happen before Edvinsson finally receives his deal.
Until then, it's time for the team to get used to "outside noise".
