The Detroit Red Wings began a four-game homestand by taking on the Calgary Flames who are one of the worst road teams in the league. Husso's gotten the call-up as Lyon is out with an undisclosed injury.
The first period would begin incredibly slow. Nothing but giveaways, blocked shots, and three whole shots on goal in the first 5 minutes of the game. Thankfully, the next shot would go from Alex DeBrincat (9), assisted by Michael Rasmussen (3) and Raymond (16) at 13:27. That's all that happened this period. I honestly felt like I was watching another Detroit Red Wings versus New York Islanders game, except everyone is faster. The period would end with the Detroit Red Wings up 1-0
The second period is here and nothing happened. Aside from a few good chances and good saves from each side. There was nothing that happened in this period that was even remotely worth noting. Detroit Red Wings would hold the 1-0 lead going into the 3rd period.
The third period was when the Calgary Flames really started to come on and shell the Detroit Red Wings. A lot of that's due to the god-awful passive defensive shell strategy that head coach Derek Lalonde has decided to keep implementing. It would be fine if they had more than a 1-goal lead and if there were three minutes left in the game. But no. This method was used with 13 minutes left in the game. A delay-of-game penalty on Larkin would lead directly to a powerplay goal against what is currently the worst powerplay in NHL history by Connor Zary to make it 1-1 with just under three minutes left. The score would remain, and we would get to see overtime in this game.
Overtime was, well, it was regular three-on-three NHL overtime. Nobody did anything until they felt like it, and aside from a Nazem Kadri break-in, nothing happened until Calgary would make one of the worst line changes I've ever seen to put the Detroit Red Wings on the powerplay. It didn't take too long for Raymond (6) to take things into his own hands and rip the puck from the top of the faceoff circles to bury the 2-1 goal from DeBrincat (10) and Seider (11).
Like I said, nothing much happened for the majority of this game. My biggest takeaway is that somebody, somewhere needs to tell the coaching staff that this current "park the bus" with any lead in the third-period strategy that they keep going back to. It's obnoxious.
