It was a close game on Saturday night in Boston as the Bruins were never able to get a two-goal lead, and the Red Wings were able to tie it in the closing minutes of the third period to send it to overtime. The Red Wings were able to get at least one point, the first time in four games, but they had a great chance to get a win if their power play could have delivered.
They certainly had their chances on Saturday as they had five power play opportunities but came up empty on all of them. While the Red Wings aren't a top team in this category, they are good enough ranking 13th in the league at 21.2 percent.
Moritz Seider has the key to what the Detroit Red Wings need to do to fix their power play
The Red Wings are going to have a great chance to bounce back on Tuesday night against the Bruins. While the Bruins rank ninth in penalty kill percentage at 83, they rank first in the league in penalty minutes with 339. There is no question that teams are getting their power play chances, and the Red Wings should have those chances in the game coming up.
After practice on Monday, Moritz Seider was asked about the power play struggles and what they need to do to fix them. "We just need to get back to a shot-first mentality and really create havoc around their net," Seider said. "We need to really try to penetrate into the danger area zone in front of Swayman's net, and if we can do that, we can break them down, and we will beat them."
There is no question that the Detroit Red Wings did not put enough pressure on Jeremy Swayman when they had the man advantage. In the five power play opportunities they were only able to get six shots on goals.
This is something that certainly has to improve, and Seider (seven power-play assists), along with Alex DeBrincat (seven power-play goals) can help in that regard. If the Detroit Red Wings can deliver a similar defensive performance to the one on Saturday and capitalize on these man-advantage opportunities, they will really help their chances of putting an end to their losing streak.
