Detroit Red Wings 2024-25 season grades: defense and goalies

The Detroit Red Wings' defense was largely horrible this season and the Goaltending was very up and down. But there were some who shined within that darkness.

The Goaltending was either the saving grace or the bane of existence

Cam Talbot: B-

Talbot started the season as the Red Wings' starting goalie, and he came out hot and ready. While the rest of the team failed to do much of anything to win games, Talbot was playing his heart out. He kept the team in far more games than they deserved to be a part of in the first half and solidified himself as the team's workhorse.

That ended up being the likely reason for Talbot's injury in December. After he returned, it seemed like you would get one of two versions of Talbot, one version where it seemed like everything that was thrown at him was going in the net, and another version where he was nearly unbeatable. Unfortunately, it all caught up to him in March, when he legitimately couldn't stop anything, and while it wasn't the only reason for the team's downfall, it was a major factor.

Alex Lyon: C

Lyon was a massive revelation for the Red Wings in the 2023-24 season when he was originally penciled in as the 3rd string goaltender, but emerged as the team's best goalie at the time. While he suffered the same fate as many other Red Wings goaltenders and was overworked to the point of getting broken. Thankfully, he was able to regain his mojo for most of the first half of the season and, much like Talbot, kept the Red Wings in far more games than they deserved to be.

Unfortunately, he met the same overworked fate that Talbot did and wasn't the same goalie after being injured at the same time as Talbot. When he came back from that injury, he was even worse than Talbot was after coming back, and unlike Talbot wasn't able to fully rebound after the new year. While he wasn't horrible, he didn't inspire the same confidence as he did earlier in the season.
