On Thursday night, the Detroit Red Wings acquired forward David Perron from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for a conditional fourth-round draft pick in 2026.

The conditions on the draft selection per The Athletic's Chris Johnston are: If Perron plays one game before the end of the regular season or during the playoffs, the pick remains in the fourth-round. If Detroit wins a playoff round and Perron appears in 50% of the games, the draft pick becomes a 2026 third-round pick.

Through 49 games this season, Perron has recorded 10 goals and 15 assists, to go along with a plus-minus rating of plus-two. Perron underwent a procedure in January due to a sports hernia, forcing him out of action for 5-7 weeks. Perron had yet to make his return to the Senators' lineup since the procedure, appearing in his last game on Jan. 20, playing 12:33 during a 4-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets.

David Perron returns

Perron previously spent two seasons with the Red Wings, appearing in 82 games during the 2022-23 campaign. That year, Perron recorded 24 goals and 32 assists, finishing second on the team in points. The following campaign, Perron skated in 76 games, totalling 17 goals and 30 assists.

Perron brings a wealth of playoff experience to the Red Wings team that is looking to break a nine-year playoff drought. A Stanley Cup champion with the St. Louis Blues in 2018-19, Perron has appeared in 110 career playoff games, chipping in 26 goals and 38 assists.

Perron will look to boost the Red Wings' recent power play struggles and help the 5-on-5 scoring that has evaded the Red Wings for the majority of the season. A pending unrestricted free agent at season’s end, Perron has an annual cap hit of $4.0 million.
