The NHL has seen its fair share of trade requests this offseason, but few have been as interesting as the situations involving Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck and Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin.
On Thursday, Hellebuyck officially confirmed what had been rumored for months: he asked the Jets for a trade. The difference is in how he has handled the situation.
Hellebuyck is showing a willingness to work with Winnipeg to make a difficult situation as easy as possible. Larkin, meanwhile, has taken a much different approach.
Hellebuyck is putting Winnipeg first
Hellebuyck made it clear that he wanted to keep his trade request private initially, giving Winnipeg time to explore its options. With training camp approaching, he decided it was time to make his wishes public.
That alone is a pretty classy way to handle the situation.

More importantly, Hellebuyck is reportedly willing to waive his no-movement clause for a variety of teams. He isn't simply telling Winnipeg, "Trade me, but only to one or two places."
He's giving the Jets options.
After spending his entire 11-year NHL career in Winnipeg, Hellebuyck understands that the organization deserves the opportunity to get something meaningful in return for him.
Larkin has taken a different approach
Larkin's situation has been far more complicated.
The Red Wings captain requested a trade shortly after the season and initially gave Detroit a three-team list before eventually expanding it to four destinations. His full no-trade clause gives him control over where he can go, but it also makes Detroit's job considerably more difficult.
And since his end-of-season media availability, Larkin has essentially disappeared from the public conversation.

There have been no public comments from Larkin explaining his decision or addressing Red Wings fans. Detroit has been left to deal with the situation while searching for a new general manager and trying to figure out what comes next.
There's a right way to handle this
Larkin has every right to use the protection negotiated into his contract. Players earn that right, and nobody can blame him for wanting control over his future.
But there's a difference between exercising your contractual rights and making the process unnecessarily difficult.
Hellebuyck appears to understand that.
He wants out of Winnipeg, but he's also willing to help the Jets find a solution. Larkin, meanwhile, has placed significant restrictions on Detroit's ability to move him, leaving the Red Wings with fewer options and potentially less leverage.
Detroit fans deserve some answers
This isn't about demanding that Larkin change his mind or suddenly become available to every team in the league.
It's about communication.
Larkin is the captain of the Detroit Red Wings. After more than a decade with the organization, fans deserve to hear from him about why he wants out and what he believes needs to change.
Connor Hellebuyck just showed that it's possible to request a trade while still treating the organization and its fans with respect.
Larkin doesn't have to follow Hellebuyck's exact path. But if he wants to leave Detroit, he should at least help explain why.
